We stumbled on this place while driving up Hwy 1 and decided to do a little sightseeing. Very casual place with awesome food! I had the crab roll, it is 98% crab, big hunks of delicious fresh crab and little filler. I also had the chowder, which was creamy with chunks of goodness. And you can sit at the picnic benches outside and watch the boats and the water. Aahh!

Great spot for an outdoor lunch. Lots of bench seats and it's clean. Most flavorful clam chowder we've had. They're right...it is addicting! Crab sandwich is also a good eat. They dump in lots of crab for $10.95.

Delicious local seafood and nowhere near as pricey as some of the other restaurants in town. My biggest disappointment was that they only make crab cakes on Saturday and Sunday, while we visited on a Tuesday. The clam chowder soup was amazing and the crab sandwich was delicious. Five stars!

Closes very early 5 o'clock. Read that the chowder was amazing so we grabbed some to go. Unfortunately they don't serve it with bread. Chowder with no sour dough :( for my liking the chowder was a little to soupy, it did have good flavor though. Had a nice spice to it, if your looking for thick chowder skip if not this place is for you.

Yum! My bf and I came here over MDW to try their famous clam chowder. IT'S DELICIOUS. Oh my! Wishing I had some right now as I type out this review. We also picked up two sandwiches - their crab sandwich and tri-tip sandwich. The sandwiches were a lot smaller than we expected them to be, considering how much they cost. I'd still say they were tasty, but I probably wouldn't get them again. We wanted to try their crab cakes as well (only served on weekends) but they were all sold out by the time we got there :( The picnic area is definitely small.. we shared a table with a few others.. but this isn't a big deal. Also, not sure if a restroom exists, but my bf and I couldn't find one so that we could wash our hands before we ate. Wish this place was closer to me because I would totally go all the time for their clam chowder. Soo yummy!

So this is a MUST go too spot when in the Bodega area. The amazing crab sandwich is a party in your mouth-lumps of crab on a soft lightly toasted roll. The chowder-where too start! Oh there are so many pieces of perfectly cooked potato that cradled the spoon, that made friends with the clams that spilled over each and every spoon before it made it too my mouth. Yeah that darn good.. Get there early, as the line gets long.

Easily some of the best clam chowder I've had. And the crab sandwiches and crab cakes, holy cow, I'd give my first born for another one of those. Sorry, Reagan, I am sure you will enjoy your new home in Bodega Bay.

Love the crab cakes & crab sandwich! Place was packed so we got our meal to go! Will defiantly make a trip out to bodega just to come back here again!

Great clam chowder. Picnic tables nice. While there was a line to order the food it moved pretty quickly and the food was ready shortly after ordering. The chowder tasted very good.

Awesome place for some chowder and sandwich. Cannot really complain about the chowder here as it is rich, creamy, and filled with ingredients. I'd just opt for the crab sandwich instead of the seafood sandwich as I do not think the shrimps taste better than the crab. Get ready for a 10 to 15 minute wait. While you are waiting just smell the ocean air and be happy that you are not stuck in a polluted city.

Clam chowder is amazing. One of the best we've had. Crab sandwich is good. The house sauce is kinda over powering and takes over the crab flavor. Service is pretty quick. Not the friendliest people I've ever dealt with. I really wanted to try to the crab cakes but they only serve them on the weekends. :(

The best clam chowder & crab sandwiches. Cute little spot across from the marina with a few picnic tables outside.

Having visited Spud Point Crab Company and the neighboring Fisherman's Cove I was prepared to pen some sort of Bodega Bay throwdown, pitting the two against one another, analyzing their relative merits, then declaring a winner. I couldn't do it. Both trade in similar fare in a similar location, but both are different and equally good. If you have the time and inclination I'd say give 'em both a go. Spud Point Crab Company's big thing is chowder. As you wait in line to order you can't help but notice the posted signs announcing that they've walked away with some grand prize at some chowder competition for four years running. So, if chowder is your thing, this is your place. They serve both white and red in ample cardboard bowls with a side of oyster crackers for $6.75. I sampled the white but ordered the red and can attest to the reason that they've won and continue to win whatever competition they're entering. It's good chowder. I also had a Shrimp Cocktail (1/4 lb. shrimp, $7.95) about which there's not much to be said. Fresh shrimp, lemon wedge, cocktail sauce, period. Spud Point Crab Company also offers an assortment of sandwiches (tri-tip, hot dog, crab, shrimp), chili, and crab cakes (weekends only). They have sodas, not alcohol, and you consume your food at outdoor picnic tables. And now, because I apparently can't help myself, I'll explain why you might also wish to try Fisherman's Cove: They have alcohol (beer, wine, and champagne); they have both indoor and outdoor seating; their menu has more "cooked things" (think fish & chips, fish tacos, etc.); their menu includes raw Tomales Bay oysters; and they offer a free cup of chowder (or very good seafood stew) with Yelp check-in. If only humans were more like 4-stomached cows we could move between Spud Point and Fisherman's Cove with ease. Until that happens you'll need to make some difficult choices. The award-winning chowder or the beer... which will it be?

Loveeeee this place! We went two days in a row because the clam chowder was that GREAT (and because they sold out of crab cakes on the first day). They sell both the regular clam chowder and red chowder. On the first day, we got the regular clam chowder and a crab sandwich. 2nd day, we came back right at 1pm for the crab cakes and chowder. I definitely recommend all three items! Don't forget to buy a loaf of bread to eat with the chowder. The crab cakes were small, but packed full of fresh crab!! Prepare to wait in line. It does move fast though. They have an express line for just clam chowder and that's cash only. Parking isn't the best when it's lunch time but well worth the walk if you have to park far.

OK, I admit it -- after living in Boston for eight years, I have some...biases regarding things like "chowdah." And I understand completely that the seafood and shellfish options are different on the two coasts. That said, I was perfectly satisfied, but not blown out, by the chowder at Spud Point. However, the delicious assortment of fried scallops, oysters, and fish that arrived with my entrée more than made up for any disappointment I may have felt when eating my chowder. And the sandwiches and other items ordered by my companions and sampled by me have convinced me that if I can't hop a flight to Boston, and am once again looking to combine delicious seafood with incredible seaside ambience, Spud Point is definitely "en pointe!"

After all the hysteria about Spud Point in the news, I dragged my spouse from the far side of Bodega Bay, amid some fussing. Despite the late American lunch hour (1:15 on a Monday), there was a long line out the door and across the parking lot. I got another dirty look from the spouse, one which seemed to indicate "this better be worth it and not another of your stupid Yelp escapades". An Indian man in front of us inquired, "so, is this like a 30 minute type of wait or what?" He had been referred from his hotel. We ordered two of the famous crab sandwiches and began the fight for a spot at a picnic table. The sandwiches emerged about 10 minutes later and we were immediately underwhelmed by their small size. We are not large people nor eaters, but for $11 each we were expecting more than what we got. They are supposed to be a quarter pound of crab each, but were fairly diminutive. At least they would be tasty! Well, not so fast. The rolls were warm but inside them was basically a cold crab salad. Chunks of fresh crab were mixed in a cold salad of onion with a lame sauce of what tasted like mayo and ketchup. Our $28 (including one sode, chips, tax and tip) appetizers gone, we left, disappointed, and wondered what we would eat for lunch. All you Yelpers can continue to line up here, but we won't be back.

The best clam chowder in Bodega Bay... Hands down!!!! Be prepared to wait in line and take your soup to go because it's always so busy, it's tough to get a spot to sit.

Spud point is directly next to fishermens cove. Go to fishermans cove and read my review of fishermans cove. FISHERMANS COVE IS KING!!!! Spuds have a tiny 12$ crab sandwich which is decent. Clam chowder is above other seafood place's but is sub par to Fishermans cove, Overall Fishermans cove offers better variety and better service and way better quality food.

My favorite crab sandwich out of all of the crab sandwiches in Bodega Bay. For me, the sweet flavor of the crab on the toasted roll is perfect. Clam chowder is also excellent. No wine/beer. Live music sometimes, too. Can get busy, but worth the wait.

The freshest and most delicious lobster and crab ever! My parents live not too far away from Bodega Bay in Sacramento. They often take short road trips around the area to sightsee and eat. This is by far their favorite, and I can see why! We had clam chowders all around, with a couple of lobster rolls to share. The piping hot clam chowders were perfect for the beautiful but slightly chilly day. They do not have indoor seating, but have a few picnic tables out front. The lobster rolls were simple and perfect! The meat was soft, tender while the bread (bolillo? french bread?) was flaky and buttery. BONUS: We took a short drive after lunch and found the most breathtaking cliffside view of the Pacific ocean! PCH is beautiful!

Long line but loved the crab cakes and clam chowder. My husband had the crab sandwich, many people say this is better than the crab cakes. I liked it a lot. Nice to sit outside at picnic tables. Was a lot of fun.

I'm confused... scratches head.. I begged my sister to come here with me after finding this place on yelp. With such promising reviews of tasty clam chowder and mouth watering pictures of crab it didn't take much arm twisting considering we live 45 minutes away plus it had been raining. Monday goes like this: Driving... driving past cows... past more cows... past our woolless 4 legged friends.. past the point of any radio reception.. past multiple oyster turn offs (drool)..... there it is, there, park girl. I'm starvin' like Marvin'! Only a few parking spots and they were full so we parked across the street in a loading zone. I was loading my bellaaaay. As we walked up we noticed there were no customers, only workers cooking and decorating for the holidays. Couldn't imagine coming on a summer day while people were actual here and finding a parking spot at all. We were greeted promptly and courteously. We mentioned it was our first visit and needed time to look the whole menu over. Lucky us, they had crab cakes and they usually only have those on the weekend. My guess was they maybe had some mix left over from the previous day, but I don't want to make assumptions. Okay ready! We order 1 crab sandwich, 1 order of crab cakes (2 per order) and a chowder for the each of us. While waiting we thought it'd be nice to pick a chowder up for mom and drive it to her. We all love chowder! We are from Massachusetts, who doesn't love some good ol New England chowdah? Because the picnic tables located outside were drenched from rain and there were no indoor seating options we parked down the road. Looking out over the beautiful cliff head in to the crashing waters and fog filled sky with just one moment of sun peering through a single cloud it seemed perfect. Sandwich was hella bomb! Crab cakes were good and chunky. But the chowder... oh no, the chowder... whaawhaawhaaaaa. You know, I noticed right when we packed the food in the car something didn't smell right. It reminded me of the smell I would get from the ladies at the mall. After they came straight from Baja Fresh and would talk right in my face with rancid onion breath. That's what I smelled. So weird. Didn't think too much of it since it was a much more mild version of the smell. Ooooh ooh that smeellll. Hmmmmm. Anyway, we popped the tops and dug in. Plp Plp Plp as we smack our tongues on our lips. Yes both of us were doing the same thing. I asked my sis if hers looked separated. Yup. I said I think it's cheese. Maybe that's their secret everyone likes. It looked and tasted like they spinckled in that powdery parmesan cheese. The one that comes in a shaker. She powered through half and I ate about a fourth. We agreed on asking to return the one we purchased for our mom in exchange for one without cheese. I called. Absolutely no cheese was part of their recipe. I asked the lady why the chowder looked so curdled and separated and said it even tasted a bit sour. She explained that type of thing happens if cooked on too high of heat for too long and it had been cooking all day. We came at 1:30pm (lunch time). Yelpers, you failed me. This is honestly the first time I was led astray and I turn to Yelp a lot. Like a lot a lot. One Yelper stated this chowder was better than East Coast. Well I don't want to battle East vs West because I've had some great chowder on this side and that side. But that's a pretty bold statement. Perhaps we have not dined at the same restaurants and perhaps we have different palettes, so who's to say one of us is right. And who's to say I'm right at all considering most of the other reviewers liked this chowder. What I do know, it was an off day in the chowder department for sure. What I do know, if it were me working and a first time customer said the soup tasted sour and was curdled I would offer a new bowl from the fresh batch which was cooking right before their eyes as they ordered. What I don't ever expect or ask for, a free next meal or a refund. I've exchanged food once my entire life (dude, the steak looked like the kitchen was playing call of duty with it. I even took 2 bites. I. Couldn't. Cut. It. And the waiter agreed, gross) but that doesn't mean if something's not right I don't say it. I like to bring things to attention when I deem necessary. This was necessary. Do give this place a try. Don't drive 45 minutes out of your way to do so. Go either in the morning when the soup is fresh or when it's busy season and there's hight turn over on fresh batches. Like I said the sandwich was absolutely yummy. My sister would have liked less dressing, but that's all preference. I loved it! It really wasn't over dressed. She even likes her lobstah rolls with like no dressing. Meh. We both agreed the tase was greatness. The cakes, you'll love em if you dig crab cakes. You can taste the filler/seasoning, but again they were chunky and quality. The crabs looked amazing. Large and fresh.

Wow! This place totally blew my mind! It's a hole-in-the-wall but has a beautiful view of the Marina. The clam chowder was perfectly flavored and the clams are totally fresh. There is only outdoor seating so we ate the chowder in the car since there was no seating left :) This place is worth the drive - we left Safari West in Santa Rosa and drove to Bodega Bay to eat and I'm glad we did!

Yummy clam chowder and great crab sandwiches. Crab cakes only on the weekends and they sell out quickly. We have been coming here for years after hiking the head. Sandwiches have gotten smaller over the years but it is all crab and still delicious. The seating is outdoors. If they are closing soon, you can walk across the street and sit on tables by the water.

Great crab sandwiches! They toast your bread and you get huge chunks of crab meat in every bite. Best I've ever had. Clam chowder was good, but had bits of shell both times I ordered. Will come back again and again for future visits to Bodega Bay. Great friendly service and cute cats to pet while you wait for your order to come out.

The chowder is the main reason to come here. Both regular and red chowder are meaty and flavorful. It comes in a paper bowl with crackers. I also ordered the tri tip sandwich, which was sweet and just okay. It's all outdoor seating and it is limited, so don't hesitate to share tables with other diners. Best chowder we've had in Sonoma county, so far.

I love clam chowder. Therefore, I love this place. The clam chowder was very chunky with goodness. I had the New England and Manhattan style (?) chowder. Both were delicious. Crab sandwich was good too. Its not a fancy restaurant with fancy food. I think that makes this place better. You sit on a bench and you eat the best clam chowder from a paper cup. A little pricey, but totally worth it.

Honestly some of the best clam chowder I have ever had. The crabcakes were amazing but you got to get there early to get them they sell out quickand are only available on Saturday and Sunday

I'm back! Clam chowder and crab sandwiches are making. They make both red and white versions. I've inly had the red, which is incredible. Friends have had the red and have said the same. Crab sandwich is awesome. Full of crab. And both super reasonable. They also have shrimp sandwiches which I assume are good. Maybe I'll try the when I get tired of the crab sandwich. Can get whole crabs as well. Long line but don't be discouraged. It's worth it.

An awesome choice for picking up some crab to put on ice to take home. The crab comes fresh from the bay, which is just a few yards away. Word on the street is they also make a delicious clam chowder (I didn't get a chance to try it) Spud Point Crab Company is easy to find. It's the place with a long line out front. The wait is well worth it.

Just came back from an afternoon in Sonoma with the family. We decided to head out to Bodega Bay for some clam chowder and found this place on Yelp. They had the highest reviews so we rushed out there to get there before they closed at 5pm. As soon as we arrived, we put in two orders of the clam chowder and since they sold out of the crab cakes, we ordered the crab cocktail. First of all, the girl at the register was far from friendly. I know it's the end of the day but you should still be polite to your customers. After we ordered, I asked if they had a restroom and she said I'd have to cross the street to the the Marina and if the one there was locked, I'd have to walk half a block down to another public restroom. I was unsuccessful on both attempts and came back annoyed since I still had to use the restroom after a long drive out there from 101. Food wise, the clam chowder was every bit as delicious as other reviewers have said. The soup was flavorful and had lots of clams and potatoes. The crab cocktail was basically 1/4 lump crab meat with a lemon and a container of cocktail sauce. Good, but not what I expected and definitely not worth the price. The fact that you're one of the best rated restaurants but you don't have even a single-stall restroom for your customers seems a little odd. Points off for that. The girl at the register's unfriendly demeanor also equates to points off. Go next door. They were way nicer and they also had a bathroom for customers.

I kept hearing how Spud Point had the most amazing clam chowder. We were visiting Napa Valley and decided to make the rather long and beautiful trek to Bodega Bay. The line was not too bad but the woman at the cash register, Ms. Congeniality could use a personality. We ordered the shrimp and crab sandwiches and both styles of chowder, the classic white and Manhattan. The sandwiches were bland. The sauce used seemed to be a simple blend of ketchup and mayo. A simple dusting of salt and pepper would have helped. Pretty disappointing but the crab sandwich tasted better because of the fresh crab meat.. Do not come here expecting a thick chowder it was a little too runny for me but it did have a good clam taste. The Manhattan chowder was super tomatoey and the clams were lost in it. Not bad but not great. Would I come back? NOPE

Ordered the crab sandwich, crab cocktail and a clam chowder. All tasted fresh and delicious, especially the chowder (around $7). The price for these three items came to be around $30, which is quite expensive, but for the quality it was well worth it. The crab sandwich was creamy, but no too heavy; however, it was much smaller (short and flat) than I expected (which was around$10). Overall, it was a great experience.

Arghhhh! I just picked up my cup of chowder to have some more and it's empty! How could that have happened! I think I had my eyes closed and was savoring the garlicky, buttery, cream, clam-y amazingness of it all and didn't realize I'd come to the end of my chowder-dream-come-true. I've also had the crab sandwich (really good, very no-frills, lets the delicious crab shine through. Maybe a tad too much mayo) and the shrimp sandwich (also good, could have used some lettuce or tomato). But the chowder---that's what I'll come back for.

On a sunny day, this is the place to get the best chowder on the bay! They also have fresh crab rolls with a quarter pound of crab in each roll, the place is always crowded with happy diners and we all sit out on tidy picnic tables.

The very very best clam chowder I have ever had! I've grown up near San Francisco and had many a clam chowder. I've had it in Boston as well. But hands down , this is the very best! Go here! Go here! Go here! I should buy some to bring home and freeze but afraid I would be disappointed if it didn't freeze well. However, I will be back !

If you're in bodega bay then this is the spot to get some solid clam chowder and their specialty the crab sandwich. My co-worker recommended I stop by because she's been looking for a legit crab sandwich place (being from maryland) and told me she found that here. I visited on a weekend and I whole heartedly agree that this sandwich was awesome. Dungeness crab meat sandwich + awesome clam chowder = delicious lunch.

I'm not quite sure how some folks can argue about the "ambience" here. First of all, it's all outdoor seating. Second, it's not table service. Third, it's picnic benches...so, please tell me why "ambience" even matters? You're out by the Pacific Ocean literally across the street from a harbor. You're going for the food! And what yummy food. The clam chowder is a must, very good flavor and not too salty. We ordered a crab sandwich and split it--decent, just crab and bread with a spicy mayo--nothing extraordinary but the crab was fresh. My only complaint would be the prices (the crab sandwich, which was not very big, was $12). You're paying for fresh, so I get it. Also, my sandwich had a few shells in it, which I also get when you're talking fresh, but more than 3 and it's telling me it wasn't picked over THAT well. That was not a pleasant experience. But overall I'd be back--to get the clam chowder again and try those crab cakes. But I'll pass on the sandwich...

Although they the outdoor seating is always full and they don't even have indoor seating, they are the best. The NE Clam Chowder is the best because it's so fresh, and perfectly creamy, not fishy, and not chewy. I love they're fresh crab sandwiches too. Mmm mmm yum! You've gotta try if you're anywhere in the North Bay. It's really not that long of a drive and the beauty of the drive makes the time roll by even faster.

Okay, I've eaten here twice now, and my take is still the same. It's not for me. I tried it again after several recommendations that made me rethink my previous experience. The one thing I've learned is that people's taste in clam chowder is personal and varies tremendously, and a clam chowder I like may not be liked by someone else. In this case, it seems as if a lot of people really like the clam chowder here. However, I agree with other reviewers that the spices in the chowder give it an "off" taste. I can't describe it....all I can say is it's not for me. I also tried the crab sandwich often raved about. I love fresh dungeness crab, but again it was just a "meh". The crab was okay, but little of it and a lot of hot dog bun. At the prices it's selling for, I'd rather buy a crab. My wife and friend who were with me had the same underwhelming experience, and we're not sure why this place gets so much business. Add the weekend crowds, the long line, the long wait, the poor quality seating, no real view of the bay, and high priced food.....I think the next time I'm in Bodega Bay I'll try one of the other restaurants that provide a better quality dining experience. I won't be back again.

The New England Clam Chowder here has to be the best i have ever had. It's light, just creamy enough, and so comforting when the chilly wind blows through the harbour. After many bowls of clam chowder in San Francisco, and my travels a little farther up north to Seattle, I can still say i like Spud Point Crab Co's far more. I appreciate that it's not full of filler potato chunks nor is it overly thick which usually makes me feel a bit guilty for eating it. Not Spud Points! For $6.75 a bowl you'll have a hearty, warm meal and buttery oyster crackers to eat. Knowing i'd be pushing it.. i still ordered a crab sandwich all for myself. I'm going to be picky and "deduct" a star for this simple sandwich. It's smaller than i anticipated and although delicious to dip in the clam chowder (as if it were a french dip and au jus) - i wouldn't come back just for the sandwich. I love a good seafood sandwich but cannot stand a cold, untoasted bun!! Don't be put off by my sandwich hating though. The chowder is worth it alone. Parking is extremely limited. They only have a few spots right up front. You'll have to park along the road and wait in line patiently. I'd have one person stand in line to order and another snag one of their picnic tables. Enjoy!

The food we had was great. We had the tri tip sandwich, crab sandwich, and the clam chowder. Everything was simply prepared, and you could really taste the freshness of the seafood. The last behind the counter wasn't that friendly, but I think it had to do with the line forming 15 minutes before closing. Wish they still had crab cakes... But guess you need to get there at 1 (when they start serving that one item)

For being a simple deli shop with a limited menu, they sure make those items well. Those items are the crab sandwiches and clam chowder. The sauce with the crab sandwiches are made with a home made, slightly tangy sauce that does not overpower the crab. The crab is caught right there in the bay and made fresh daily. So good!! And the other great part of the sandwich is the slightly toasted and chewy roll they use. Nom nom! The clam chowder has perfect amounts of potatoes, onions and clam, in a slightly spicy garlicky-cream soup. It's the best clam chowder I've had! My husband and I make it a point to stop here every time we are in Bodega Bay and order up these two items. We've tried others, but these are the best, even for breakfast!!

After camping at Doran Beach, we stopped by for a snack. Service was quick and friendly. I loved the shrimp cocktail, and my husband recommends the clam chowder. I was hoping for a cold draft beer, but they don't serve alcohol. I also think it's a little overpriced.

Everytime someone comes to visit we take them here. Their clam chowder and sourdough bread are fantastic! If there is a line out the door, don't worry! It's definitely worth the wait. You'll love the view across the street. Would give another star if they served IPAs.

My new Bride and I had to stop here on our Honeymoon, as we heard it was a "must stop" in Bodega. We went mid week and there was not a long line to wait in, but the restaurant was definitely busy. The ladies behind the counter were very nice and the seating area was mainly (or all? - I can't remember) outside next to the bay and docks. We decided to get our food to go and drive up to Bodega Head to enjoy the view, chowder, and crab sandwich. The sandwich and chowder were amazing! Definitely lived up to the hype. We will be back! I can see how the place would be slammed during the busier season/days, which is a sign of quality and consistency. If you don't like the crowds, there are plenty of options for incredible places to picnic along the coast!

Went on recommendation of a friend. Typical f and c stand with above average food.we had Manhattan chowder which is not found often on the Pacific coast. Served piping hot and loaded with clams other good stuff. Will return for the fish and chips.

Super simple, absolutely delicious. Lunched here after a hike along the Sonoma Coast and got clam chowder (the creamy kind) and a crab sandwich. Both were perfectly seasoned, the soup creamy but not too thick and stocked with perfect chunks of potato and clam, the sandwich filled with fresh, sweet, lightly dressed crab meat on fresh bread that presented the perfect contrast. You won't find anything fancy here, but what they have is obviously fresh and prepared with care. The place is spotlessly clean and the service is friendly. Seating is outdoor on picnic benches without any overhang, so if you're sensitive to the sun, bring a hat. But honestly, do yourself a favor and stop in here. You won't regret it.

Wow! Seriously the BEST clam chowder!! Soooo good. The clams were fresh and tasty and the seasoning was perfect. The crab sandwich was full of fresh sweet crab and tasted amazing. It's not cheap ($45 for 2 sandwiches, 2 clam chowders n 2 drinks) but it's worth it! Just wish we were here on the wknd to try their crab cakes.

Yes, their clam chowder is indeed addictive!!! I tried the other clam chowder served at other Bodega Bay restaurants, hands down the chowder at Spud Point is tops. The clam chowder is just the right amount of creaminess, clams, potatoes and herbs. We also had the crab sandwich, perfect to pair with the clam chowder. Too bad I was not able to try their crab cakes, but I did order extra clam chowder to go. Yes they are that good!!! A definite must try if you are in Bodega Bay, just a word of warning not a lot of parking space, and just outdoor bench sitting, but the food makes it up for it!

My friend is adamant that this place is good. We came on President's Day around 10am before we were heading back home and they were OUT OF CRAB! How does a CRAB place have no crab?!? That's like when I went to El Pollo Loco and they were out of chicken, so I called them El Loco. They didn't get it. Since we were there, we each got chowder and shared a bay shrimp roll (couldn't even get a crab roll, let alone crab cakes). I'd skip the shrimp roll, but I'd recommend the chowder. Much better than Swan Oyster Depot in the city. I'll update this review for crab next time we go. Apparently the crab cakes are only on weekends. We'll try again.

Came here at noon on Sunday. The place was crowded and we had to wait a while to get our food. No whole crab ready and no crab cakes ready, either! Wth?! Noon on Sunday and we couldn't have either! We were disappointed, but at least we were able to have the Clam chowder and crab cocktail which were fabulous and made up for it! The chowder had plenty of clams, potatoes and seasoning! Yumm-o!

We drive by this place all the time and always admire the lines of people waiting. We also talk about how thankful we are that we do not live next door. Having said all that, we tried it and were pleased. BUT, they use garlic in their calm chowder and where as it kind of worked it is not traditional and that for us was strange and kind of a deal breaker. So, great location, very popular but not traditional calm chowder. Not saying don't go there just be aware.

Ooohhh, this was a memorable lunch. You have to go through town and around the edge of the Bay to get there, but it's very authentic. We had two of the top sellers, the crab sandwich and the clam chowder. No indoor seating, but a number of picnic tables outside a row of simmering pots of clam chowder. The tri-tip and crab cakes were sold out, meaning next time they hopefully will still have some! They have a little competition from a similar joint next door. After eating, drive up to the ocean overlook and relax on the beach or hike the trails.

Hands down the best clam chowder we have ever had! The line was long but moved quickly and well worth the wait! Can't wait to come back.

My kids are on a quest to locate the best clam chowder in the world. They are addicts. We've had chowder in San Francisco, Monterey, all over Southern California, and even in freaking Mexico and I can officially tell you, Spud Point has the best clam chowder on the planet! Sweet mother of clams it is phenomenal. The wife and I also got crab sandwiches which were the best I've ever had in my life. We liked this place so much we decided to go back again before we left Bodega Bay. Parking sucks but other than that, get your ass in there and eat some awesome seafood!

  • Tyler L.

This place is the real deal when it comes to their clam chowder. Come on in and try it. I promise you won't be disappointed. This is coming from someone who owns 2 seafood & chowder restaurants himself :)

The crab sandwich is amazing...loaded with fresh, tasty crab on a warm roll. I could eat that everyday. Just perfect.

In my opinion, this is the best New England clam chowder I've ever tasted - definitely the best in Bodega Bay. My husband & I each order a bowl of clam chowder and split a crab sandwich fir the perfect lunch. I can't tell you how anything else on their menu tastes - I love these two items so much that's all I ever order. Definitely worth a stop for lunch when you're in Bodega Bay.

The clam chowder is tasty . I can taste the garlic. Not as good as clam chowder in Monterey, but very good.

What a Simple and fast meal, but with the added crab it's luxurious! The Crab is amazing and the crab sandwich was delicious! I had the crab cocktail as well and since you can't go wrong with crab no complaints here but the cocktail sauce was no go for me...would have been amazing with some melted butter to go! The clam chowder was one of the best chowders I've ever had. This small outdoor place is a great spot to try if you are in the area. If I was a local I'd eat here every day!

    (4)
  • Anwar H.

Clam chowder was very good.... creamy and rich full of clams. I'd get the crab sandwich any day. No shortage of fresh crab mean here. Will stop by the next time I am around,

All take out or sit outside on veranda with harbor view. Basic crab app- fresh sweet local and did I say fresh Crab sandwich- basic no frills, mediocre bread 5 Bean salad- delicious and not from a can Unfortunately no wine to wash it down. Clam chowder is steaming outdoors adds a little character

  • Tim H.

Went here early on a Sunday which was a good idea since the outdoor seating fills up before noon and there's always a line at the counter. The clam chowder is the best of the local selections and the crab sandwich is all crab with a little dressing on fresh bread. The crab cakes are available from 1-2 on the weekend and I'm going back. I went back for the crab cakes at 1 PM and I don't see the attraction. Too much Old Bay Seasoning. I'm a bit biased when it comes to crab cakes after spending a lot of time in the DC area and eating many Maryland crab cakes. I usually maintain a practice of not ordering them anyplace else and will go back to that practice after this one exception.

This place was recommended to us by our concierge at hotel healdsburg and after an incredible drive down the pacific coast we ate here and it's the best crab sandwich and clam chowder we've ever had. This place is a must for locals and tourists alike!

Great clam chowder and crabs at only $6.49 a pound! Can't get any better than this. The clam chowder has great flavor and wasn't full of potatoes like another place I went to earlier in Bodega Bay. I've never had cold crabs before since I always think of it as not being that fresh. However, after eating the crab here, it's definitely changed my attitude about it. Though cold, it was full of flavor and the meat didn't feel mushy at all. It complemented very well with the dipping sauces that they provided. Each crab was about about 2.5 lbs and they even offered to clean it for you! If you opt to cook the crabs yourself, you can purchase live crabs at the same price. I haven't tried the crab cakes that everyone raves about, but I definitely want to the next time I visit! Great service, yummy food, and fair prices makes visiting this place a no brainer if you're in Bodega Bay. There's only limited outdoor seating in front of the restaurant.

Love this place! Grab a crab sandwich, sit on the patio, listen to the waves and the birds. Super chill, delicious food, exactly what you want out of a crab shack on the bay :)

Great place to eat sandwich and clam chowder. Got lucky with a parking space in the front. Even though the missed one part of my order the staff was very friendly and made it right away so I don't have to wait any longer.

  • Audrey F.

The clam chowder is hands down a 5 stars. It is absolutely delicious and probably the best I've ever had. I 100% recommend this spot if you love clam chowder, are not currently hungry, and genuinely want to eat outside or in your car. My boyfriend and I stopped here today after an 8 mile hike ravenous. It was 2:00 pm on a Friday so we expected to have missed the lunchtime rush. The restaurant was packed. We ordered two containers of clam chowder and a shrimp sandwich and were given a 15 to 20 minute wait estimate. One hour later we received our food. The chowder was amazing. The shrimp sandwich was okay, but not the best. There was a man playing guitar and harmonica on the patio (aka aggregation of picnic benches on the side of the road) which made our wait slightly better. But it was still 50 degrees and cold and windy and generally unpleasant. I think I'm just not hard core enough for Spud Point Crab Company. I'll happily take a hit in the chowder quality to eat somewhere inside without an unexpectedly long wait.

  • Karen S.

I think this place has the BEST clam chowder in Bodega Bay. We were visiting on Labor Day weekend. It's not like "New England Clam Chowder" like East coast style with bacon. This is the Northern California version, a must visit if you are in town. We've eaten here twice, that's how much We loved it! Tried the crab sandwich also, it's on a toasted roll and just enough of their homemade dressing that it wasn't over powering and taking away from the taste of the fresh crab meat ! Service is fast and friendly, they are open at 9 am. If you get there during lunch tine there is a line out the door but well worth the wait!

  • Nina W.

Love this place, worth the drive, Clam chowder's is the best ever!!! I have clam chowder' at other places, but this is by far the best in Northern Cal, I know.

  • Cliff S.

Pretty dope spot. Small. But very fast service, they must have like a huge pool of clam chowder in the back! The chowder was pretty good, not totally the best. BUT that CRAB SANDWICH though, was THE bomb. The bread was super soft and the crab was pretty fresh too, if I ever come back to Bodega Bay, this is where my ass is headed. Yummy Yummy I've got love in my tummy.

My husband and I drove 2 hours to try the food. We got there around 1:30 on a Saturday. The line was huge, they were out of the crab cakes. The clam chowder was really good, the best I've had, it was full of delicious spices. The crab sandwich was ok, it lacked spices, lettuce, etc. Overall, the one item I highly recommend is the chowder. The place is very crowded and no where to sit. You're also very closed with strangers while you're in line and waiting for your food, it took a long time to get the good.

Hands down, the best meal we ate on our vacation to California. I have never had a crab sandwich this good in all my life. It was so fresh and the crab really shined because there wasn't any filler or too much mayo. The bread was awesome, too. It was nice and soft and a perfect compliment to the crab. I could have easily eaten another sandwich. We also ordered the New England clam chowder. It had a little peppery kick, and the perfect, creamy consistency. The scenery was also beautiful. This little eatery is located across the street from the water with just a few picnic tables out front, so be prepared to get cozy with other diners. I would love to try their crab cakes sometime, but they didn't have any when we were there.

Fantastic chowder, one of best that I tasted in the country. Coming from new england and traveled to seattle for some of the amazing chowders, this is a high compliment. I like the red chowder better than the traditional new england style. perfect texture. fresh clams. great ingredients. heavenly. One needs to experience this at least once in one's life. preferably as many time as one possibly can, for an out-of-towner. I like the outside seating area, pretty laid back little port town, prefect for a lazy summer morning. I even convinced my friend to have it as the first meal of the day (who was very hesitant as he prefers traditional brunch) and he was blown away. we also had the crab sandwich -- fabulous.

  • Charlie H.

The crab is fresh and best crab sandwich in the county. However the size and amount of the crab has been reduced in the last 2 years. The value of the sandwich is becoming very pricey. Go back to the larger size crab sandwich for the new increase in prices. The clam chowders of New England and Manhattan styles are very very good and compliment the sandwich well. I would rate a 5 Star if the prices were lower and the parking is terrible.

Only place to get CHOWDER! Go early , cause the lines get Long.. Very fun place to go with friends .

The crab cakes were just ok. Really pricey for 2 cakes: about 2 inches round, & 1 inch thick 10$ & something. Eh! Wouldn't rush back for them.

A perfect pitstop on our afternoon of hiking and exploring the nearby parks. I'm sure that there is little that I can add to the reviews of Spud Point. But, it still deserves some praise. This was some of the finest chowder I've had. Loved that they do my much preferred red version. A generous helping of some hot sauce and it was sublime. No skimping on the clams in this soup either, it was loaded. We split a big helping of that and also had a 1/4 pound of crab cocktail. Damn, that crab was good too! Nothing wrong with anything here. You can get full crabs here when they are in season around November. Loved the location right by the marina where you just chill with your food and watch the action around the boats and the water. Spud Point is a can't miss if you're in the area.

  • Jamie W.

The food here was pretty good but I'm not sure it's the best thing I've ever eaten like the line suggests! We tried one of everything on the menu and the group favorite was definitely the crab sandwich. We were visiting from out of town but if we came back I would definitely just get the sandwich and skip the chowder and crab cakes. It was really really good.

As my phone's data continuously failed me at Bodega Bay, all I could do was shout STOP when we passed by the store. I recalled looking it up and places claiming that this place had the best clam chowder. They were right. As I took my parents in to try a cup of their clam chowder, we were all pleasantly surprised. The flavor of the soup was excellent, taking a heavy garlic and pepper flavor, and there was a good amount of clams in the soup as well. They cook their clam chowder in a double boiler, so they're able to make thick and creamy chowder without the fear of burning the soup! (My mom loved the idea and plans to use a double boiler every time she prepares clam chowder from now on). As we left the store to continue sight seeing, we ended up deciding to buy a few more tubs to take home. It was fantastic with some toasted bread to dip in the soup. I'm definitely returning here during my next visit! Also, they sell crabs starting in November, so it might be a good spot to get crabs once they're in season.

Amazing. Best clam chowder I have ever had! Definitely worth the stop and the wait. We will make a special trip out just for more of the clam chowder.

Yum! I was pleasantly surprised that this place was as good as the majority of the reviews indicate. We got the clam chowder, crab sandwich and crab cakes. It was so good. We ended up getting back in line to get two more crab sandwiches to go. Next time I come back to Bodega Bay, I will definitely come back here!

  • Serena W.

The white clam chowder is amazing! Rich, not too creamy and had perfect portions of ingredients. My friend had the crab sandwich which was delicious and fresh. Didn't get a chance to try the crab cakes since they don't start serving them till 1. Definitely coming back for the chowder and crab cakes.

Look high and low and I seriously doubt you will find better clam chowder or a better Crab Sandwich. This place is THE BEST hands down. I drive nearly 2 hours to get there just for the food and its well worth it!!

  • Dorothy L.

Oh man ALL the food here is good! We are not locals and my dad has been dying to come here for the crab sandwiches We almost ordered every single item here to try -red chowder -clam chowder -crab sandwiches -shrimp sandwiches -tri tip sandwiches -chili cheese hot dog -crab cocktail Must order the crab sandwich, the clam chowder, & crab cocktail! The only thing I didn't like is the fact that the red chowder has sand in the soup. They didn't clean the clams as well compare to their clams in the clam chowder

  • Sana K.

I've been trying clam chowders up the coast all week and this place has been the best so far! It's worth the hype. So much better than the chowder next door. This was so creamy and rich with the right amount of potatoes and seasoning. The crab sandwich here is also worth getting! The live music was also fun to listen to while eating.

Rebecca and I stopped in for lunch today. We tried to follow the GPS, but it got lost. We found this using our instinct. This is a very relaxed place. We ordered a bowl of clam chowder and a crab sandwich. The chowder was good, but the bowl we had last night was better; it had more clams. The sandwich was great. It had lots of crab and was not hidden by cheddar cheese. It was a very good sandwich. There is no seating inside, so we sat on picnic benches outside, which was just fine. The mist had stopped, so sitting outside worked great. This was a very good lunch and we enjoyed it very much. This is a place to come back to.

This time we timed it right, and I finally got to try their super popular crab cakes. Now I know why they sell out so quick! Perfect spice, huge crab chucks, with a delish red pepper dippin' sauce. So worth the drive. It's a great little place right on the water. Stand in a quick line, order at the counter, and grab a picinic bench. Or take it with you and drive the rest of the road down to the point and have a tailgate picnic. Even on a foggy windy day, you can't beat the view. Crab sandwich! Delicious, a hint of tang, and big chucks of crab. When the crab cakes are sold out, this is still so worth it. The bf is not a fish fan, but is a fan of the tri tip and chili here. More yummy yummy crab for me.

  • Brandy R.

I consider myself a clam chowder connoisseur of sorts.... I've had clam chowders that are more of a chowder (not so much clams) to clam chowders that are full of clams! This place is great! Nice mix of clams, potatos and spices. Definitely my favorite spot in Bodega. Parking however is a pain in the neck... bring some good walking shoes in case you have to hike a mile down the road.

  • Marilyn P.

Always have crab sandwhich and bowl of chowder when Bodega Bay. Usually great but this time chowder had way to much garlic. Ieat it back at rv had to put heavy cream in to dilute the taste.

This is the kind of gem that you find using Yelp! We had just arrived in Bodega Bay and had no idea what/where to eat. My sister had read a few reviews on Google and had selected a place that seemed a lot more "touristy" than I was willing to let pass. So I quickly hopped on Yelp! searched nearby and found this little treasure. Sure enough, it did not dissapoint. We had 3 cups of clam chowder, which is incredible, 2 crab sandwiches, again great, and a crab salad, pretty good. This place gets points for; the small, off the beaten path ambiance, the view (you're in the harbor), and certainly not least, the awesome fresh food.

Great clam chowder! I even had the pleasure of making a furry friend while eating outside.

  • Lilah B.

Although the outdoor seating is always full, the service isn't what you would expect from a mom and pop shop, and most of the menu is overpriced, the clam chowder alone makes this place worthwhile. HOLY GOODNESS the chowder! One friend of mine described it as angels dancing inside your mouth, another as an orgasm you can swallow, this chowder is like nothing I've ever tasted. I spent a large part of my childhood in Maine, so I know chowder: and Spud Point still has the best.

Clam chowder and crab sandwiches galore- the most scrumptious meal by the shore! Yes, that rhyme was intentional

    (5)
  • Kimya P.

I read somewhere - probably yelp - that you know it's good if when you arrive there's a line and when you're leaving the line is even longer. Spud Point is phenomenal. A little oily. Slightly garlicky. Tangible chunks of obviously fresh clam. And, totally satisfying. It's a shack on the side of the road with benches out front and the bay right across the street. We decided to pick up our chowder and then drive a couple minutes further to Bodega Head. We parked at the bluffs and walked down to the ocean where we enjoyed our piping hot chowder by the water. One star off for being out of sourdough (I love being able to dip bread into my chowder), but they gave us extra oyster cookies to make up for it.

We stopped by Bodega Bay to grab some seafood before heading home. This place did not disappoint. We came on Labor Day Monday, so unfortunately they only serve crab cakes on Saturdays and Sundays. They also didn't have any fresh whole crabs. Besides those disappointments, everything else was very good. My wife and I had the clam chowder, crab sandwich, crab cocktail, and shrimp cocktail. The clam chowder and sandwich were excellent. I've had many clam chowders over the years, this was definitely one of my favorites. We enjoyed the clam chowder so much, that we ordered another to go to take on the road. My wife finished it before we made it home. This is one of my favorite local seafood places.

Spud Point Crab Company makes for a good refueling spot prior to a walk around the Bodega Bay headlands. The sign on the door claims that their Clam Chowder is addictive which is true as I kept on eating my girlfriend's chowder despite claiming I don't like Clam Chowder. The only issue is trying to get a seat outside as the place is always packed for lunch in the holiday season.

  • Angelina L.

This place clearly knows how to make their clam chowder. With yearly awards on their chowder, I am a believer. Went here for the first time today! This place gets packed pretty quickly and there are very limited amounts of seating. So we got our food to go. We ordered their famous clam chowder & crab cakes. OHh... MEEE... GEE.. the crab cakes are truly amazing. With every bite packs a punch of flavor and the crab meat you can easily separate with your fork. Sadly, they only serve the crab cakes on Saturday & Sunday, but it is a MUST TRY. The clam chowder is top notch. Card Friendly, friendly & fast service. This is a for sure stop if you guys are ever in the area.

  • Karin L.

Solid clam chowder - way better than the place next door (which is probably why the place next door is giving out free chowder/soup with a yelp check-in). The best clam chowder we've had in the area - 3x so far. I'd get this again even with free next door, it was full of clams and had a really nice balance of flavor and creaminess. A little herby (in a good way) and as others have mentioned not a bit of sand. Highly recommended. The red chowder was also really good. Garlicky (in a good way) and had a slight kick to it. The crab sandwich had big pieces of crab and the bread went well with the clam chowder. I would say that it had a little to much mayo for me, but I was still impressed. Got a little piece of crab non-edible, so be a bit careful but at least you know it is real and tasty. Overall, I think the best game plan would be to consider what you want to eat when you get there. Definitely pick up the clam chowder at Spuds but if you want the bbq oysters and fish and chips, head next door.

  • Michelle L.

This is THE best crab sandwich and clam chowder around. The crab sandwich will melt in your mouth, this is all crabby goodness with hardly any filler or mayo. The clam chowder is perfection, not too rich just enough garlic and butter and the perfect consistency. The crab cakes and crab cocktail are also lip smacking delicious. Do not attempt to share with your mate - get your own or one of you will be sorry. TRUST ME you will want two of everything. The word is out so go mid-week and off peak times if you can or expect to wait in line. They only have a few tables so be prepared. The only seating is outside on the small patio, it's community table style and dog friendly.

A fleet of picnic tables, a guy on a guitar, and crabs caught across the road. What more could a gal ask for? Or a guy? Or a dog? Or a crab? Ok, the crabs get the short end of the stick here. The clams also get screwed. It's all been said. Go to here for the best crab sandwich and best clam chowder in the history of the world. The Mayan's say the end is nigh... so hurry. Hands down one of the best clam chowders I've had. The line was pretty long when we got there on a Saturday afternoon, but it moves pretty quickly. The clam chowder isn't bland and is full of different ingredients. The crab cakes were also delicious. On a nice, sunny day, it's perfect to grab food from the shack and eat it right on the water

Hard to add to add anything more than an endorsement of previous reviews. Crab sandwich was outstanding. Crab focused, light additional sauce, delightful. Clam chowder was full of flavor and took well to added Tabasco. In our instance, a wonderful place to sit and enjoy this food, a view of the marina, and the battle between blue sky and fog immediately above us. Guessing from the geography, I imagine that it's a common situation. If/when back in the area, I'd go out of my way to avoid more formal restaurants to enjoy this experience again. Hope this reinforces previous good reviews!

Revisited on a Saturday, as promised, for that weekend experience instead of during the weekday. Still 4 stars, as before Great place to eat when on the coast. Noticed a lot of patrons despite the coolness of the weather, which is a testimony to the staying power of this place. My wife and I both had the clam chowder, although next time I might opt for the Manhattan variety as it looked like it had more clams in it. I have eaten at the fancier and more expensive places in the Bodega area and if you don't mind the casual atmosphere it still reigns supreme. I learned a lesson. The red "manhattan" chowder may look more interesting, might have more clams, but boy was it spicy. Really spicy! Now, some like it that way but I had to fight with my taste buds to finish it. Back to the "boston" chowder next time. But, I just love the ambiance of this place but you gotta know this is not fine dining. It is what it is.

Simply the best clam chowder EVER! I would prefer crab sand witch with less mayo but it was still exceptional. Cannot wait to go back.

  • Chad C.

The crab is extremely fresh, well prepared, juicy and nothing short of delicious! The fresh, lightly toasted bun makes for a wonderful pairing for the crab sandwich. If you're a fan of clam chowder, this is a must! The chowder is one of the best I've ever had. The staff is friendly and attentive. The only reason I wouldn't give it 5 stars is because of the seating. The only option is outside and Bodega Bay is known to get chilly at times. My advice would be to bear the weather and bring a jacket... The chowder will warm you up!

    (4)
  • John T.

The clam chowder really is excellent, nice and creamy, slightly garlicky. The crab sandwich is also great and just that, a quarter pound of lightly dressed crab on a luscious toasted roll. Unfortunately, the crab cakes don't start until 1pm on the weekends and we were there at 11am, so no crab cakes for us. I will definitely go back for the chowder!

I can only echo the accolades lavished upon Spud Point Crab Co.'s clam chowder. It's flavorful, thick and well endowed with clam and potato. Pair it with their crab cakes and you'll be in heaven. We visited on a Sunday and found out that the crab cakes aren't available until 13:00. Kinda' explains the line of people that extended into the street at 12:45. Good thing we brought our own folding chairs because every picnic bench at Spud Point Crab Co. was spoken for well in advance of receiving our order.

The crabs here are so yummy! I wish I was eating some right now. We spotted this place on the way to Bodega Head but weren't sure if we'd stop by because we had just eaten. We figured we'd see how we felt afterwards. I was still kind of iffy about stopping here when we were done with Bodega Head because I wasn't hungry but the rest of the gang said we should stop by since we were already in the area. I am sooo glad we did! At first, I was a bit reluctant of how the crab would taste because it was cold. I'd never had cold crab before. The workers clean it before they serve it to you. The crab was absolutely amazing! It was so sweet and so tasty! The clam chowder was delicious as well! The price was right and the food was excellent. I will definitely be back when I'm in the area.

Fantastic chowder! I lived in Boston for 5 yrs, and I wasn't sure anywhere else could truly replicate it. Well they can, and with well added notes of heavy garlic to give it some NorCal flavor. Well done!

Clam chowder and crab sandwich still the best!!! For those that don't like seafood they also have a great tri-tip sandwich and hotdogs for the kids. If you are coming through town in the am there is coffee and donuts.

Without a doubt the GREATEST bowl of clam chowder i've ever had. Very delicious - absolutely worth the wait, as there was a long line out to the road almost. It moved quickly, and the cashier was very courteous, joking with us and handling the packed house like a pro. Before long I was enjoying a bowl of HOT delicious chowder, just the thing I needed after a long ride. Coming back very soon.

This little pit stop is a must do when you are in Bodega Bay. I took a little day trip out there and it was worth the drive. I would do it again when I have some free time. Their chowder is so on point. It is the best in Northern California and I am pretty picky I must say when it comes to chowder. They only have one size which is pretty big, but well worth every drop of goodness. It's very flavorful and yummo. Their crab sandwich was amazing as well. They are not stingy with it, which is nice considering the price you are paying for it, you definitely get your moneys worth! I will definitely recommend this place to anyone that is looking for the BEST of the best in Bodgea Bay. It's a must try and visit and you will not be let down that's for sure. The ladies were really nice, there wasn't a wait when I went (I stopped by 1 hour before closing) and they have outside seating. There's barely any parking in the front, but plenty of road side parking.

Whoa!!!! The clam chowder here is the best tasting soup I've ever eaten by a lot. The crab sandwich is also incredible. If you go to the bay head, do not miss this spot. The lady who was working here was also really nice.

Clam chowder is the best of the half dozen similar places in and around Bodega Bay, equal even to the (excellent) chowder at the Marshall Store up on Tomales Bay, which is the measuring stick on this part of the coast. The long lines at this place move quickly and tables turn over quick too - you can come on a busy day and still be eating 30 minutes after you arrive. The crab sandwich may look small, but it's packed with a quarter pound of the freshest, most perfect and delectable crab meat ever committed to bread. The red chowder - more of a soup than a chowder - might even be better than the New England. Lots of garlic and spice, enormous flavor. The service is friendly, fast, and affordable compared to other places. For example, the $22 crab sandwich at The Tides is not quite as good as the one here, and their $12 chowder isn't even in the same class as that served here. No ambience, but great people and great food.

Order the famous clam chowder to go and I'm so happy it wasn't a disappointment! It was flavorful and delicious!!!

This is for the New England clam chowder only. My mom brings me a couple containers home everytime she's in Bodega Bay, and when I talked to her on sunday she said that she found a place that's supposed to have the best voted chowder in the world (as I giggled) she said Oh I meant Bodega Bay. I've had clam chowder from a couple of places around Bodega and this was no better, kind of thin, and had no wow factor that I was looking for based on the reviews.

I really wanted to love this as a clam chowder fan. It was pretty good but with all the hype I was expecting better. I actually really prefer my recipe and haven't found a chowder that comes close besides over at The Union Oyster House in Boston. I did like the consistency, just thick enough. It seemed garlicky. It is better than most restaurant chowders. Kind of pricey too. On my next trip to Bodega Bay I will try the crab sandwich.

** Chowder Review Only ** It was a chilly blustery day, but for some reason the in-laws thought it would be great to go for a hike on the beach at Bodega Bay where it was even chillier and blusterier. We turned around after about 2 minutes out of the car with sand in our eyes and mouths. What was the little roadside stand we'd passed by that their friends always rave about? Spud Point. No indoor seating and a couple of picnic tables out front. Small menu. They have red & white clam chowder, a crab roll, tri-tip sandwich, chili, hot dogs, crabcakes (weekends only), and a couple of other things I'm missing. We wanted to try both chowders, but they were out of red (4pm Sat) so just grabbed a couple of white clam chowders to share. Good stuff. Very clammy and not super creamy broth. High chunkage factor of 1/4-1/3" potato pieces and *lots* of tender clam meat. Nice mix of seasonings really enhanced the overall flavors. We were going to take a taste on the picnic tables and then search for warmer environs, but couldn't stop eating once we started. I think there's a sprinkle of crack in the soup too! If you're in the area and a fan of chowder, you gotta give this place a try.

The Crab sandwich is one of the best in my top 3. Needless to say the crab is fresh and the soft bread makes it worth the drive from San Francisco. The Clam chowder is worth a try too. Come on a hot day as this is an outdoor eating area.

Went here for lunch after a day of collecting invertebrates from the harbor docks. We came in the late-ish afternoon so there wasn't very much of a crowd, which is good because there are only a couple benches in the outdoor seating patio in the front. I don't know where to park... across the street in the harbor parking lot? I got the New England (white) clam chowder. It was alright. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't amazing, with an ok amount of clams in it. I've had better. A friend of mine got the Boston? (red) Chowder. Theirs didn't seem as thick/chowdery, and it was alright as well. Service was fast, and a good place to stop, but I didn't have a mind blowing experience here. Maybe it was just the time I went? I should have tried the crab sandwich - I've heard it's the best. But the chowders, ehh, they were good. That's about all I have to say about that.

Freshly caught crab sandwiches on tasty bakery bread. Clam chowder that ranks right up there with the best I've ever had. No doubt about it: this place is a gem. A word of warning: Spud's is definitely "off the beaten path" - fire up the GPS. Also, there is no inside dining. You order at the cashier, and then there are several picnic tables outside that you can sit and eat at if you are so inclined. If that's not to your liking, just get a to-go order. Spud's has been added to my "must visit" list for any Bodega Bay visit.

Yum for all you crab lovers, if you aren't a crab lover get the tri tip you won't be disappointed! Crab sandwich is a lot of delicious crab on a soft roll and tossed in a delicious sauce. Tri tip is tender and melts in your moth. Served on the same soft roll and smothered in a light tangy BBQ sauce. Chowder has excellent flavor and is loaded in clams. I would have liked a little more potato but flavor was excellent. Crab cakes- best I have ever had. Light fluffy and well seasoned breading and barely fried. Loaded with crab and red pepper sauce gave excellent flavor. They aren't available until 1 pm on weekends only and sell out quick! Outdoor seating only and difficult parking with usually a long line. Line moves quickly and you will forget all about it when you try their food.

Place was good. IMO a little overrated... but everyone has their opinion I guess. I hate the lack of selection of food. Definitely good spot for a light lunch though. The chowder didn't give me an orgasm like the rest of everyone else lol... it just tasted like chowder.. just a different variation of it. Texture was good though!

The BEST crab sandwich! No crab sandwich ever beats them. The homemade bread and the special sauce they use on the crab sandwiches are to die for!!! Yummmmmm!!!!!

Worth the drive! The crab sandwich was the best. The roll was soft and the dressing was not over powering. The crab was fresh and plenty of it.

Excellent clam chowder and crab sandwiches!!! The New England clam chowder has good flavor, fresh clams and nice little chunks of potato with the right level of consistency. The crab sandwich has lots of crab and is also very good. One of the best I've had. Definitely worth a stop if you are in for a casual meal in Bodega Bay.

Best Clam chowder in Bodega Bay hands down. Consistently great. You can skip the crab sandwich. Just bread and crab. On the small side.

Is it worth driving 30 minutes for a bowl of clam chowder in a cardboard container? Even if if it includes asking for directions, searching for a parking space, and squeezing into a picnic table? If it's the Spud, the answer is a resounding yes. The clam chowder was great. (I must admit I got the tomato based chowder, not the traditional cream based chowder.) The crab sandwich was even better. Ton's of fresh picked crab piled on a soft-ish hoagie roll. If you're over 25, it's big enough for two. There are also crab cakes. At least in theory. Here's how the counter lady explained it: "Only on the weekend, starting at 1:00. They're always gone by 2:00." You can take the food away or you can eat at the Spud. There are maybe six picnic tables out front. Share the space. Our table mates asked "Where are y'all from?" Turns out we're fellow Georgians. There are only 3 parking spaces. The rest rooms are across the street in the marina. Go Spud. You'll be glad you did.

We drove by the first day we arrived to Bodega and noticed it was already closed at 7pm, so we made sure to come for lunch the following day. It was packed! We stood in line for about 10-15 mins, ordered our food and grabbed a picnic table outside. This stupid big guy was all up in my space. Geeze. Anyways, Hubby and I shared: Crab cakes: 4/5 amazingly delicious. Huge chunks of crab. The only complaint was that it was cold. Clam chowder: 5/5 now I understand why it is sooo famous. It was not too creamy, good texture, perfect amount of clams. Add a squeeze of lemon to give it a little kick. Our friends who got the crab sandwich said it was awesome. It was chunks and chunks of pure crab! If the line was shorter we woulda gone for a second round.

We were driving around Bodega Bay when I found myself a bit peckish. We had passed by Spud Point on the way out and I had seen their sign advertising that they had the best clam chowder on the coast. How could I pass up an opportunity to try that - especially when I was dealing with a hungry grumbling tummy? So Marty indulged me while I ran up and got a cup of chowder. Well I have no point of comparison, theirs being the only chowder I tasted in the area but this was some dang fine chowder all the same. It was not overly rich or heavy nor was it lacking in substance. As Goldilocks would say "It was just right". There was a real complexity to the seasonings and the slightest amount of heat that made it all the more soothing on a cool foggy day. There was also a nice ratio of clams to potatoes and the cams were all sweet and tender. Nothing chewy or tough here. I had to force myself to stop at half since we were still going to go to get lunch elsewhere (seafood is not Marty's thing). But to tell you how much I liked this - I ate the leftovers for breakfast the next day. Yes I did. Don't judge.

Picked up some food to take back to our rental cottage on a very rainy afternoon. Really good crab sandwich with lots of fresh crab and lightly dressed; delicious, creamy clam chowder with lots of clams, good crab cakes that we needed to reheat and crisp up, and a shrimp cocktail with a nice, light cocktail sauce. All in all a very nice meal - tasty, reasonably priced, and filling. And the two young ladies working the stove and counter were very friendly. Oh, and don't forget to pick up some of the salted caramel next to the register. Very good stuff.

I'm going to up my review a little bit. Went again yesterday with my girlfriend and we shared a crab sandwich and the clam chowder. The clam chowder, as it was last time, was fantastic. Very fresh and savory. Now, the crab sandwich was good. I just think they were a little heavy-handed with the sauce. I'd love some crab, a little bit of butter, and a little bit of lemon, but I feel like they're disguising crab that doesn't need any disguise. Good bread, though a bit on the pricy side.

Just experienced this place for the first time this week. Another first for me, Boston Red Clam Chowder. These folks make it up good with tons of garlic (make sure whoever is with you gets the same because otherwise you will blow them out of the water the rest of the day with your breath), and it is truly chock full of clams all simmered up in a (did I already mention) garlicky & savory thick red tomato broth. Also give their smoked salmon a try. It is rich in flavor, not too smokey with a bit of a sweet taste, flaky and perfect to take home and serve with a soft cheese on fresh bread. I was told the owner's son catches it and the daughter-in-law smokes it---truly a family business. There was not a long line when we were there for lunch, but then on the way home we stopped again to load up on more smoked salmon and the line was quite long. It does move quickly. The picnic tables out front are set up so you eat family style with the rest of the patrons, which is fun. The seating can be a bit limited if they are really busy. The service is very good, lots of smiles---even with the long lines and impatient customers, the ladies behind the counter were friendly and charming.

We were driving up to a place to hike when we noticed that this place was voted Best Clam Chowder so, we had to try it. Their clam chowders and crab cocktail are excellent. I had the red chowder and got to taste the regular chowder. I must say both were the best chowders that I ever had. During our trip up to Bodega Bay we went here twice and on the second time we had double orders. The line can be quite long and they don't really have a huge seating area. They do have several picnic tables outside but, they fill up quickly however, the marina across the street has some benches and tables as well. I don't really have anything negative to say as far as the food goes. Parking, seating, and the wait can be challenging however, once you get beyond that it's all good from there!

  • Barb C.

Outdoor seating was full, so we picked up a pint of chowder to go. It was delicious, flavorful, but could have used a little bit more clam. Crab cakes are only available on the weekend, so I was a little disappointed about that.

I had always been one to say that I do not like clam chowder, that is until I came here. Great Merlin's Beard!! The best clam chowder I've ever had! We came here on a late Friday afternoon. There was a line but really nothing like the weekend crowd. I had never heard of "red chowder" before so I ordered that. Amazing...tomato based with a spicy kick to your unsuspecting palette! My friend and my kid ordered the classic chowder which I had a taste of...wow! Someone posted a pic in which they got 1/2 red and 1/2 white...genius! The chowder is rich, huge clams, potatoes, veggies...the seasonings just blew me away! My daughter and I are forever ruined for clam chowder. We crave and dream of this place! So next time you're out for a drive, or finished hiking the coast, stop here for some yummy in your tummy or better yet take some for a clam chowder sunset dinner. You will not be disappointed :o)

We were craving crab and were willing to drive over 115 miles for it. Boy, we weren't disappointed! Although crab season is over, Spud Point Crab Co managed to secure crabs from a local crabber to sell. We arrived a little after 1pm and they were just putting 50 crabs into the steamer. It took an hour for the crabs to steam. While we were waiting, we tried their famous clam chowder. It was delicious! Not overly creamy and tasted of herbs. It wasn't just cream, clams, potatoes and onions. Their clam chowder had lots of clam juice, parsley and carrots. It was a welcome change! We patiently waited for our crabs to steam and we weren't disappointed. We got a 3-pound crab and a 2-pound crab. They cleaned the crabs for us and handed them to us in a plastic bag. Pros - delicious crab, out-of-this-world clam chowder, fresh bay shrimp cocktail! Cons - You never know when they'll have fresh crab. Call ahead to check. Next time we will try their crab sandwich and other items on their menu.

We frequent this place often as we live less than an hour's drive and often spend a week or two out here during the year on vacation as well. The clam chowder is the best you will find in the area. Nothing can compete. I'm already looking forward to our next drive out there.

Probably the best Crab Cakes I ever had since I moved in the Bay Area. The clam chowder and the crab sandwich are also very good :) Must try: - Clam Chowder ($6.75) - Crab sandwich ($10.95) - Crab Cakes ($10.95) Always crowded. Nice terrace (well, when the weather is nice!). Complete review (in French): blogs.lexpress.fr/styles…

What's with the glowing 4-star reviews for this place? It definitely deserves 5 stars for what it is. Quick stop, great food, fantastic service, family run, very clean. No linen tablecloths here. Award winning clam chowder is no joke. It IS that good. Creamy, meaty, tender potato cubes and chunks of clam spiced perfectly with lots of flavors and depth. Not enough heat for me but there was hot sauce on the table (you can always add hot but can't take it away so this was perfect). Crab sandwich is what you'd expect. Lot's of crab, easy on the spices (the crab stands on it's own) and served on a toasted bun. It disappeared rather quickly. Tri-tip sandwich was a great closer. Being a competition BBQ cooker from the South I cast a wary eye to this so-called California BBQ but this was heaven on a bun. Sliced thin across the grain, no gristle or excessive fat and a compliment of just enough sauce to hold it all together. Home run! I'm sure everything else on the menu is great and I look forward to eating my way through it on the next trip to the left coast. Do not leave without having that clam chowder!

Hands down some of the best Chowder I have ever had. You will be lucky if you show up here and don't have to wait in line. So the items here that I think are a must have are the chowder and the crab sandwich. I always have to tell the lady that works there to limit me to only one sandwich. If you are in the area this is a must.

It may not look like much from the outside but Spud Point Crab Company is fabulous!I've been coming here for years and it's hands down the best chowder available in Bodega Bay! If you come on the weekend, expect a line but it's well worth the wait. You won't be disappointed!

It a foodie heaven, little more than a shack and some seats, but beautifully fresh and plentiful crab rolls. The clam chowder is good too, but that's not what we come here for. Since there's not much space, and because we have kids, we head. down to the beach. All in all it's a wonderful experience. Not fancy, but brilliant.

We popped in one morning for breakfast before leaving Bodega Bay. We weren't terribly hungry, but we wanted to try their clam chowder and crab rolls, so we figured we would stop. This is a little storefront, right next door to a home, and it's directly across the street from the bay. There is a counter inside where you order, and beautifully stained and lacquered picnic tables outside where you can eat. The view is great, and the lady that took our order was very friendly. I'll start with the crab rolls. They were good - a good quality bread, warm and toasted. The crab itself was plentiful and sweet. They are large - served on a hoagie bun - and they literally weigh it out, so you're definitely getting the correct amount of crab. I had a couple of really tiny pieces of shell in my crab sammie. I was getting a little full on the bread, so I made the second 1/2 of my sammie an open face, and I liked that ratio of crab to bread a bit more. We also ordered the clam chowder, and it was incredible - quite possibly the best clam chowder we've ever had. It was full of clams, potatoes and a rich & flavorful broth that was creamy and thick. I believe it was flavored with marjoram, which was a really nice compliment to the clams. We'll stop back for the clam chowder next time we are nearby, and then we'll finish the meal by having BBQ oysters next door (Fisherman's Cove). I would recommend you do the same! That combination is definitely a 5 star experience. **BTW, Spud Point Crab Company is NOT open on Wednesdays**

    - Crab sandwich: Pretty good - Clam chowder: Pretty good. Comes with 2 packets of oyster crackers. The food comes out pretty quickly after you order it. There are a few picnic tables out front, but we ate in our car because it was SO cold.

Hands down the best clam chowder I've had to date, and I've had a Lot of clam chowder. My wife, who doesn't enjoy chowder, was battling me for the last few spoonfuls. The broth is flavorful and delicious. The crab sandwiches, while coming with a decent portion of crab (1/4 lb), they were kind of "Bleh." Just seemed like they were missing something. All-in-all, come for the chowder.

    (4)
  • Christina L.

The award-winning clam chowder did not disappoint. It was packed with intermixed flavors of clam, thyme, rosemary, and garlic. Creamy, and not too thick. As delicious as it was, the flavor was slightly overwhelming. I think if it was paired with some crusty sourdough, I would have enjoyed it a little more. But, that may be because I'm a carboholic. The Dungeness Crab Sandwich was heaven on a roll. The slightly tangy dressing kept the crab chunks together and prevented them from falling out of the roll, but did not get in the way of the fresh crab flavor. Perfection!

Rude, Rude, Rude, Rude We drove up from San Francisco - specifically to try the food. Arrived at 4:30pm on Saturday. We were informed that the outdoor picnic tables were closing early and they already cleaned them so we would have to walk to the marina across the street to use their picnic tables. We ordered from the woman with the tattoo on the neck. She was downright angry we were there. She said "you know we close at 5 right?" We said "yes - it's 4:30". She huffed through the order clearly angry at us. When another customer came in behind us at 4:33 - she became angry with them and said "we're pretty much out of everything and don't think of sitting at the picnic tables". The food was good - but the service was unbelievably bad. no restrooms.

Always worth the wait and worth getting one of everything (crab chowder, crab sandwich, and crab cakes) you'll find the room. The sandwich is the best of the bunch, but the mixed white and red crab chowder is also awesome (oyster crackers!). Spud Point always motivates a drive north from the city!

I'm updating my review because I've now tried the red chowder. I really like it. It is a bit spicy, with a strong tomato-garlic flavor. Now I have trouble deciding which one to get when I visit Spud Point.

I realize that I have written many 5 star reviews over the last several months, but Sonoma County knows what it's doing when it comes to food!! This place is no exception. Their clam chowder is absolutely incredible. Whenever I bring this place up with customers at work or with coworkers, 8 out of 10 people have been here and 8 out of 8 agree that it is the best chowder they have ever had. I like to get a crab sandwich to dip in the New England style chowder. I am not crazy about the Manhattan style, but I can see how other people might go crazy for it. No matter what, though... You have to make a trip out here to try this place. A bit of a pain to get to, parking might be a hassle... but for the best chowdah you've ever tasted? Well worth it!

I like clam chowder a lot. I don't eat it that often, but damn was this chowder good. The pieces of clam were abundant, the potatoes were cooked well, and the overall flavor was way more tangy and less blah than a lot of other chowders I've had. It was cold sitting outside but the chowder was well worth the wait and the outside seating. Matt B got a plain hot dog that he enjoyed.

Visited Spuds on a co-workers recommendation, Thanks Candi :-) So glad we made the trip! Absolutely DELISH!! OMG the clam chowder is super creamy! consistency and flavor are perfect. The ingredients are fresh, big pieces of clam and they are NOT chewy at all. Spuds personnel were super friendly too. Oh and we saw a dog wearing sunglasses so THATS worth a star right there LOL. I also tried crab sandwich, crab cakes (snagged last order, so sorry lady with white dog behind me HAHA) and the tri tip sandwich. Everything was wonderful. We went in Feb and it was nippy to say the least so dress appropriate as this place is super popular and lines form quick! For my own safety snagged two more clam chowders to take to my kids :-)

Great patio. I had a crab sandwich that was pretty good, it didn't blow me out of the water, but better than most of the seafood this guy from the midwest sees. The outdoor seating is great . The workers don't seem to really be that friendly, probably b/c of the sheer number of tourists (guilty as charged) they have to deal with. Oh well, good food, great location.

Yummy! If you come with a friend try sharing a crab sandwich and a cup of chowder. It's a perfect size serving for 2 people.

I went there last year and I'm just now writing a review for it. Ohhh Mannnn this place is friggin awesome! I'll never have clam chowder from anywhere else again. My favorite menu item was the crab roll. YUM. My wife had the crab cakes, and these were her favorite. We are planning another trip there soon just for the food. Highly recommend to anyone who loves having only the best seafood.

2nd time to Spud Point Crab Company Sat 7/25/09. It's across from Spud Point Marina on the way to Bodega Head. Small place. Tables outside only. They take credit cards! We got: clam chowder $6.75 - they say it's a pint, but it seems kinda small. I recommend 1 per Person! It's really good. Lots of clams, cream, other stuff. Tasty. shrimp sandwich $8.95 - 1/4 lb bay shrimp w/ homemade sauce on a soft roll. We thought it was just ok. Hubby really wanted a crab sandwich after seeing they had a huge pot of crab boiling outside. We had it before & thought it was just ok. We'll have to try it again. Hrs: Open 6 days a week 8:30a-5p Closed Wed

The chowder here is awesome. The red one was alright, but the New England style is better. I love cream and will always take New England over a Manhattan style or tomato based chowder any day. Don't get the crab sandwich here though. Get it next door at Fisherman's cove. The crab sandwich is pretty plain. Just some crab meat mixed with some mayo on a french roll. Pretty typical and not worth the price.

I stayed in Bodega Bay recently and took a ride out to Bodega Head. On the way, we grabbed a "cup" of chowder and a crab sandwich from Spud Point Crab and went up to the head to eat outside and enjoy the scenery. When we got to the top of Bodega Head and opened the bags, we were shocked to see a HUGE serving of clam chowder and masses of crab meat stuffed into a soft, fresh, buttery roll. I'm from New England and didn't expect the chowder to live up to my expectations but it did - and then some. It was creamy, fresh and loaded with clams. The seasoning was just right and I was disappointed when I reached the end of what seemed like an endless vat of the stuff! No wonder they continue to win awards for this chowder. It's among the best I've ever tasted. When I unwrapped the crab sandwich, I couldn't believe the amount of crab meat they used. It was FANTASTIC! The meat was incredibly fresh and sweet and they used just enough dressing to flavor but not overpower it. Unlike most places, the crab wasn't swimming in the dressing. It was - by far - one of the best crab sandwiches I've ever had. I went on a Thursday afternoon but I've been told that they make killer crab cakes on the weekends. But get there early because they sell out fast! And believe me, if the crab cakes are as good as the chowder and the crab sandwich, I can understand why. Spud Point has very limited outdoor seating so if you make the trip to Bodega Bay, be sure to grab your loot and drive up to Bodega Head. Between the food and the coastal landscape, you'll swear you've died and gone to heaven!

we were looking forward to eating here after all these reviews, but to be quite honest, were disappointed. clam chowder felt quite watered down and crab sandwich meat was cold. The only good thing i can say about clam chowder was, it was hot. Also, the ladies behind the counter need to work on their attitudes. They could definitely smile more and be more attentive and friendly to their customers.

Was here last week during a week long trip to CA. Was with family and we decided to try this place based on so many positive reviews. We were not disappointed! The clam chowder is amazing, probably the best I have ever had. As other reviewers have said the chowder has more of a broth base. Which makes the soup a little bit lighter and in my opinion better! We also tried a chili dog, which is so big, everyone at our table had bites of it. The other hit at the table was the crab sandwich! It's simple, crab, mayo, bread but man is it good! The crab shines in this sandwich. They have a few picnic tables outside to eat on, but this place gets crowded quickly. Right behind the picnic tables is the an area where they are steaming crabs, it's fun to watch while you are waiting for your food! Would highly recommend stopping here for some good food!

food is excellent and prices are reasonable HOWEVER the portions are small. my family loved the crab and clam chowder. i am not a seafood eater. the tri-tip sandwich was very good but there was very little meat on it. should have gone with the chili dog. packed on the day we went but were lucky to get a table.

The clam chowder is literally the best I have ever had in my entire life. I normally shy away from clam chowder because it is so often just rubbery clams in a fishy roux of potato cream but this was sheer perfection. It had much more of a broth base than most chowders, perfectly cooked red potato chunks, fresh herbs, and was spiced perfectly with what I can only assume is crack-cocaine. The only reason I am not giving 5 stars is that we also had the crab sandwich which had so much potential. Generous portions with lots of crab, a few shell bits here and there (as to be expected) and nice toasty French bread. The sandwich really could have done wonders with a bit of crunch from some onion or lettuce, but it was just the lump crab in a mayonnaise-based sauce on a roll - nothing more. Next time, I will just bring my own loaf of crusty French bread and only order the chowder as the two locals next to us did. We will definitely be back for the chowder soon!

One of the best crab sandwiches I've ever had. Same for the clam chowder. My wife and I have been in bodega bay over the weekend for my birthday, and we needed a place for lunch today. We "stumbled" over this place driving past the marina. It's small, and only outdoor seating....but, lots of people ( always a good sign). The ordering was efficient, and our food was ready very quickly....the chowder is cooked in pots visible to everyone....awesome aesthetics for a small place like this. The food is simply great....and before we left, I got an order of crab cakes since they are only available on sat and sun....also fantastic tasting.

I'm glad we stopped here for lunch instead of some of the close-by sit down spots. It just felt more like i was on a trip to eat outside. Anyways tasty crab salad sandwich and chowder. It's called crab cake on the menu but it's really crab salad. don't let that dissuade you though because it's pretty good. For vegetarians they'll make you a grilled cheese too!

  • Jacqueline G.

Hands down....best clam chowder I have ever had! My son loves their chili. I haven't tried their crab cakes yet...maybe next time...because I will be back here many more times! They used to be closed on Wednesdays, however, from what I understand they are open everyday now. Seating is a little limited, but many tables and benches close by.

Wow. We went there a few weeks ago during our trip to the area. The clam chowder was fabulous, but the crab sandwich was the best I've ever eaten. The fat tom cat who "owned" the place was funny too. If you're anyplace near here, don't miss this, it was fabulous!

If the Kennedys ended up in Spud Point rather than Hyannis Port, believe you me, they would be all over this place. Why? It's the chowduh. However, since they had to pahk the cah in Havud Yad, the New England clam chowder at the Spud Point Crab Company is left to the local fishermen and us plebeians from the big city to savor and enjoy. It's worth the drive to the quiet wharf side of Bodega Bay, though luckily Jamie W. and I were on our way to Mendocino anyway. A stop at 10AM worked out just fine since they were already open for the locals since before 8. Although it seems pricey at $6.75, the chowder comes in a good-sized cardboard cup. The soup is off-white really but not overwhelmingly creamy. It's more brothy with lots of chunks of potato and big fresh clams. The kick comes from the roasted garlic, black pepper, dried thyme, parsley, rosemary and oregano. Add a few spluges of hot sauce and load up on oyster crackers, and you have a fine cup of warm ambrosia (see my photo). Now you would think that would be enough before a long journey northward, but no... We also had the $9.95 Crab Roll, which was fresh and slathered with mayo (mmmm) and came on toasted sourdough (see my photo). It's tasty alright...I just wish it came with lettuce and tomato and maybe some red onions to add more crunch to it. By the way, seating is completely outdoors on their picnic tables. If the weather is as beautiful as it was when we were there, it's heavenly. Otherwise, dress warm. By the way, don't fret as there is a restroom in the marina building across the street. FOOD - 4 stars...5 stars for the chowder...the crab roll brings it down a bit just because it needed accessories AMBIANCE - 4 stars...on a sunny day, wonderful...but it does rain in California SERVICE - 4 stars...family-run and it shows TOTAL - 4 stars...yep, stop for the chowder so you can handle the long and winding road back

If you make BBBH, do not leave without hitting up this place. They were sold out of crab cakes, so we had the chowder and crab sandwich. OOHH OOHH WEEE. AWESOME. best chowder EVER!!! I thought a little spendy until I tasted it. Worth every penny.

mMmMmMM, Chow-dah ( yelp.com/biz_photos/H161… ). We ordered the Famous Clam Chowder ($6.75) to-go, and sadly had to miss out on the highly recommended crab sandwich since we were too full. However, my cousin said the crab sandwich was deliciously fresh, and is not too be missed! Their crab has to be super fresh, since they are right across the street from the pier. This place is tiny, and only has outdoor seating picnic table style, so you go in and place your order, they hand you your food and you can decide to eat it then or not. The clam chowder was really creamy and yummy, clams were plentiful and not overcooked, and the potatoes were fluffy and soft. Their clam chowder was a little different in that it had a little kick of heat at the end- I couldn't figure out whether that was from cayenne or another spice. In any case, Spud Point Crab Company is a must stop if you're in the Bodega Bay area! They have a few parking spots right up front (20 minutes maximum).

THE BEST New England clam chowder I've ever had. I don't even like clams! It's the sweet (but not overly) roasted garlic and herbed broth (and I mean broth -- it's not sticky, thick, gluey or floury (raw roux) like a lot of other chowders ... just enough body to keep it from being too thin) ... and, I do even like the clams ... they're perfectly cooked to be yet tender (not rubbery at all). I have literally driven over here from St. Helena (about a 90 minute drive) to satiate a craving for this soup. Although one time a couple of months ago, my craving went unsated because it happened to be a Wednesday and they're closed on Wednesdays (outside of the summer season, I think (their website just says closed Wednesdays)) ... but, that's okay my friend and I stopped at Ranch House in Sebastopol on my way back to St. Helena and stuffed ourselves with their delicious corned beef hash with fried over-medium eggs. I've also had the crab sandwich, which is plain, but very good nonetheless. My husband has had the chili dog and wasn't real impressed with it (although he's comparing it to the Kobe beef chili cheese dog at Slim's Last Chance Chili in Seattle -- which, in my view is very hard to measure up to). They also sell whole cooked crab (brought in fresh daily). I drove over from St. Helena to buy them and then made my version of "Angry Crab" -- cracked whole crab stir fried in a wok with roasted garlic oil, Calabrian chiles, herbs and a touch of home-made mayo -- yum!! Be prepared to wait. Lines can be long and seating is communal and limited. It's worth it in my view. Won't be back in the area until October ... and now I've done it ... I'm craving the soup! Just tried to weasel some semblance of the recipe from Carol, who, understandably, doesn't give it out! Guess I'll just have to wait (although I did learn that they will be closed for two weeks in early October to clean) ... damn, that means late October or November before I get more of this soup!

This place had the best crab I've ever tasted! I split a crab sandwich and clam chowder with a friend. It was expensive, but the portions were just right. The crab sandwich may look small, but it was loaded with so much fresh crab. The clam chowder was really good too---possibly the best I've ever tasted! I wish I got crab cakes though :(

  • Benjamin L.

The clam chowder had some garlic in it, which was a welcome surprise. The sandwiches (tri-tip and crab) were sumptuous. Don't forget to try their chili!

  • Lee H.

Basic menu with a seafood focus. Order at the counter and eat picnic style outside and take in the bustle of crab boats as they come and go right across the street. Crab sandwich was tasty, but the crab itself wasn't super sweet like I like. Could be nearing the end of the season and the meat just isn't up to par. The red clam chowder was spicy and full of clams. I've never had a red variety and glad I tried it. The classic New England clam chowder is the star of the show. Creamy, flavorful and full of clams and worth returning for.

Not since Maine have I had such a delicious fresh crustacean sandwich! The chowder fabulous too...don't forget to keep driving and get to the lookout point for an amazing (usually windy) vista.

Thank you fellow Yelpers, this place is AWESOME!!! The crabcakes are the best, plump with sweet crabmeat. It was a long wait in line, but well worth it. Side note: We were there on a Saturday, but they were very adamant about serving crabcakes (weekends only) at 1 PM. We had to let people go before us because it was 12:45 PM. Even though we waited longer, we would still go again. Wiser for now. ;) They will even clean and cook your crab, you pick it there or at home. The people in line also deserve a thumbs up for patience, good attitude, and just plain friendly, so bring your happy faces. This place does their best in service and quality for the amount of customers they serve. Thank you SPCC!!!

I had a little time to kill so I went to try the clam chowder... It is no joke; probably the best chowder I've ever had! Seating is limited and the place gets crowded, for good reason! If you're in the area, it's definitely worth the stop!

Best clam chowder I have ever had, hands down. Clams were perfectly cooked. The crab cakes were good; I especially liked the red bell pepper sauce it is served with. The crab sandwich was generous with the crab and BF liked it. The seating is limited, which means you will likely end up seated with strangers, which is fine by me but other people may not like that. Drink selection is limited; they don't serve alcohol. Two minor things: Long line, all seating outdoors. Lucky for us, it was a nice day, but think twice if it's cold out. And the tri-tip sandwich was not good. The meat was dry and the sauce was overpoweringly sweet. Would not recommend it. But if you like clam chowder, this is the place for you. Also we saw some people buying cooked crabs ready to go, which they were planning to use to make a pasta dish later. Good idea if you're local because the meat was cooked perfectly.

Crab sandwich - Yay, I'm a fan. It's about $11 for 1/4 pound crab meat in a lightly toasted roll. Awesome breakfast, lunch, and to-go items. Clam chowder - It's good but you can skip it if you are full. Crab cake - It's overprice and can skip if you are full. The staffs are very nice and helpful.

I have come back yet again. Still worth the drive! I finally got to have some of the infamous crab cakes. Every other time i've gone, they were sold out! The crab cakes definitely live up to the hype - all killer crab and barely any filler. Love that dipping sauce too. Spud Point Crab Co, you continue to top the chart and steadily hold the #1 spot on my Clam Chowder Quest.

Extremely good clam chowder - huge chunks of clam - absolutely amazing! We didn't get a chance to have their crab cakes (only avail on Sat & Sun). I heard that the crab sandwich is delicious... something we'll have to try the next time we head back in that area. Parking lot is only 2 spaces: just park in the lot down the road and take the quick walk along the bay.

Just in the nick of time we stumbled upon Spud Point. We had skipped breakfast and it was already mid-afternoon on a Bodega Bay Saturday. Just the perfect weather and location to stop and chow down. Picnic tables were full but a space opened up just as we were ready to sit. Order at the counter. Everyone seemed happy and eager to please. What to do, what to order? Glad to have friends who like to share. We opted to split tri-tip sandwich and an order of crab cakes. The portions aren't huge, the prices are fair, and we both left satisfied. I am very particular about my crab cakes -- growing up on the Eastern Shore beauties -- Spud's were moist and not load with filler, which is how most California cafes choose to prepare them. They were served with a small side of house-made slaw and a spicy special sauce (i.e. mayo that was also made in-house). Under foggy skies - nothing new for this corner of California - clearly lots of others were enjoying the same and more. The Spud is famous for its clam chowder and people were bringing pots to carry it away. Someone else was chowing down on chili with cheese. I might have to give that a shot next time. What do I love about places like this? Local, road trip food. My favorite. Small groups will love this spot but table space might be an issue.

Well worth the 15 n wait in line to order! Crab sandwich is stuffed with chucks of Dungeness crab on a fresh warm roll. Crab cakes with roasted red pepper sauced are also delicious.

LOVED their crab rolls - just like a lobster roll. Filled with delicious lump crabmeat - so simple. Spud point is off the beaten track - but what a find! We'll be back for more!

Delicious clam chowder and crab sandwich! The parking situation is tricky but the food is worth the hassle. The crab sandwich was at least as good as lobster rolls I've had on Maine. Tasted very fresh.

They have the best New England-style clam chowder! It is thick, tasty, beautifully seasoned (absolutely no extra pepper needed) & has the right proportions of clams, potatoes & other goodies!! My family brought extras back to our vacation house after eating there for lunch. My son-in-law raved about the Manhattan-style clam chowder as well. I would love to have this restaurant in San Diego!! I'd be there at least once a week if it were possible! It is well worth a side trip from Napa or an afternoon jaunt from San Francisco accompanied by another activity.

Despite all the rave reviews from fellow Yelpers, I thought the food here was just OK. The place itself is charming enough, cute mom and pop shop, picnic tables outside right on the marina. So much potential. Clam chowder was pretty good, but I can't say it's the best I ever had. Lots of clams in a rich peppery chowder. Too watery for my taste. Crab sandwich was really disappointing. Average crab meat in an almost stale bread roll. I guess Bodega Bay isn't known for their crab. Paying $17 for this really made me feel like like I was tricked into eating at a tourist trap.

I was hungry by the time we arrived here from south of the bay at 11AM (my usual lunch time). I'm a crab-lover and was looking forward to having a yummy crab lunch before heading off to our hike at Bodega Head. It's unfortunate that they don't have the crab cakes ready until 1PM. We went ahead and ordered the clam chowder and crab sandwich which was good and satisfied our hunger for the time being. When we paid, I asked if we could pre-order the crab cakes, pay now and just pick them up at 1. With a smile, I was told they don't take pre-orders. Obviously, they have no problem selling out their crab cakes on weekends. So we ended up coming back to this place at 1PM, lining up, and ordering the crab cakes. (It was on our way after leaving Bodega Head). We were there right at 1PM and a line had already formed with perhaps 10 people ahead of us. If you order just crab cakes, you don't have to wait very long for your order to be ready. If you order other menu items, the wait is a little longer. When they say they have their crab cakes ready at 1, their crab cakes are ready at 1. I agree with most of the reviews of their crab menu items: delicious! You can taste the freshness and sweetness of the crab and it's not drowned out by the sauces. Price is on the high end, but that hasn't deterred us crab-lovers.

Took a nice Sunday drive up to have some crab sandwiches and they were pretty good. It's a small place but the line moves fast and the food is fresh. Do not miss the clam chowder! It is definitely the best I ever had. There's a nice view of the boats and there is plenty of seating outside and across the street at the marina. Also plenty of shops to check out around town of art and gifts and other delights.

Good local grub, off the main drag. The clam chowder was good, as the other reviews stated, but rather smooth. If you like chunky, this isn't the place for you. The crab sandwich was simple and very good. My only complaint was it was pretty small for the price and disappeared far too quickly. The place was packed but service still seemed friendly and efficient. It's worth a try. Note: They will be closed until Oct. 7th for their annual maintenance.

Not alot of places to eat so I did a trip advisor review as I actually forgot about YELP- Food- known for Clam Chowder with hotdogs, tri tip and cake sandwiches to name a few. They have oyster crackers to go with it but it would be nice to have sourdough bread. BUT you can buy a loaf homemade on spot for about $3.00. Bought a to go container for $6.95 which at first I thought was small but with the loaf of bread between us it was filling. Seating- All seating is outside, picnic table style with room for about 20 people. Last time were there they had a gentleman playing softly on a guitar which was a nice touch. Parking on site only holds 3 cars but there's usually some parking down the street not too far. Went there on Saturday about 1:00 and not too crowded. Service- so-so which is odd as I am sure the tourism adds to the business Would definitely stop here again if we were visiting

The atmosphere is great, small inside and the only seating was outside at picnic tables, but the ocean breeze and marina views are amazing. It was so packed that when my husband and I stopped here I jumped out of the car and got in line. Yes, there was a line, I thought to myself "this place has to be good." It was not too long of a wait, they give you a number and call you when it's ready. So the food... The crab sandwich is to die for. I have never had such fresh crab and the bread was soft and the sauce was yummy and complimented the crab well without covering the taste. Next was the clam chowder. I have never had this dish be so robust and flavorful. It was packed with onions and garlic and parsley. You could definitely still taste the clams, but the seasoning just really made the soup so good. This is going to be the place for me and the hubby to get our clam chowder fix from now on! Next time need to try the crab cakes and tri-tip sandwich.

Yummy crab sandwich and clam chowder? Check. Salty wind and view of the Bay? Check. Random bluesy Elvis crooner? Check. Gotta come here while you're in Bodega Bay, check out the boats, and enjoy the sights and sounds of this little dive. The food is great and the ambiance is top notch - what a sense of place!

Perfect lunch! We arrived at the recommendation of our host at a tasting at Freestone. The clam chowder surpassed expectations and made for a perfect lunch as we watched seals in the harbor. Plenty of bench seating at the marina if the picnic tables in front of this 'hole in the wall' happen to be full!

A great off the beaten path find. The food is excellent and the service fast. The Red Clam Chodwer is, well I could write songs about it. And the tri-tip sandwich...I could have ordered another one for dessert! Dining is picnic tables out front, and all the customers there were very friendly.

Love to stop here every time I'm staying up in Bodega Bay, which is often. The clam chowder is to die for! YUM!!!!! Arriving here right at noon was a bit risky, however the line was not too long and i moved rather quickly. I liked the outdoor picnic table seating, and before we could blink and eye I food was out and and we were enjoying a hot cups of delicious Clam Chowder and delicious Crab and Shrimp Rolls. Fresh Crab, Fresh Shrimp, Delicious warm rolls, tasty mayo based sauce and nothing else. The Clam Chowder was amazing. Very flavorful, Perfectly seasoned with fresh herbs and spices and not too creamy or rich the perfect consistency in my opinion. Lots of clams and and Potatoes. Certainly seems like the best place to sop in for lunch while visiting Bodega Bay, Do not let the line deter you, it moves fast and is soooo worth it!

I couldnt get enough clam chowder. You MUST get the crab sandwich to dip in the clam chowder as well! I compare all clam chowder to the Spud Point Crab Company's.

I would agree that the clam chowder is good, but not special. While I kinda like the ginger twist (yes, it has ginger)...I had better clam chowders...the best clam chowder I had was at Princeton Sea Food Company at Half Moon Bay...those babies have large chunks of clams! And the taste was really good...can't wait to go back there...But the crab sandwiches are the bomb! The crabs fillings are from real crabs...unlike those fake ones they sell in San Francisco while keeping a straight face with their claim those are real crab meat... 4 STARS Service is friendly enough and casual...4 STARS The place is also small, good thing we were there early, otherwise, we would've been like those folks lining up looking at us eat...No restroom too, so get ready to cross the street to get to the public bathroom...and do not believe one of the reviewer here that said the bathroom is half a mile...its is just several feet away, but you do have to cross the street...and the parking is only good enough for 3 cars...you can park on the street.... 2 STAR Price does not justify the servings...but better compared to THE BOAT HOUSE 3 STAR OVER-ALL STARS: 3.25 or 3

After cruising around Bodega Head, we decided to hit up town to get some chow. The weather was beautiful out, around 75 degrees with only a hint of wind. This was my first time in Bodega Bay since I was a child so didn't remember any of the restaurants. Driving past the dock, there were limited options, however, there was a little shack that advertised "Best Clam Chowder". We both rolled our eyes at this proclamation and continued to Bodega Head, but upon return, curiosity got the best of us and we parked in front. That and there wasn't really anything else We ordered the crab cakes, which Yelpers told us was in high demand and ran out quickly, and a cup of their award winning clam chowder. We got all that for the princely sum of $17. The chowder was in a small bowl that was not even filled to the top and would cost $5 anywhere. The crab cakes were delicious, however, were served lukewarm; I don't know if this was by design. I usually prefer my food hot. However, unlike most crab cakes that have a little crab and a lot of filler, each of the two cakes were packed with crab meat. It was served in a bed of minced lettuce and the red pepper sauce was a most savory condiment. The cakes were delicious on their own and hardly needed sauce. The chowder lived up to its arrogant sign. It was really that good. If you are searching for healthy clam chowder, go kick some rocks as you won't find it here. This chowder was made with a lot of butter and cream to make it rich. In addition, it was filled with fresh pieces of clam. The broth was so damn buttery that I felt like I was drinking melted butter. The broth probably consisted of 50% butter. It was very hearty and I wish I had more. This chowder is perfect for a cold day as it is also a tad bit spicy, which will warm up the mouth as well as the stomach. This place is a literal 10x10 room. You cannot miss its sign heralding its perch among the totem pole of chowder. You can see the steaming vats of chowder being prepared out by the tables. In addition, the crab and clams here are extremely fresh, as if they were caught that morning.

Amazing crab sandwich and clam chowder. The crab sandwich had so much crab meat, I could not believe it! Can't wait to go back!

We biked down the windy Bodega Head for the crab roll and were not disappointed. Not by the base sandwich itself, although it may have had a bit more mayo than I'd choose. We also requested some add on's and these are not allowed. I respect that, but the sandwich would have benefited in my opinion with some crunch; lettuce, celery, something. It was also a bit small to split but we had wine and cheese back at the Inn to make up for it. It was good, but not a must have for me.

OVERALL:4.3 FOOD:4.5 SERVICE:4 AMBIANCE:4.5 VALUE:4 OK, OK we get it....the clam chowder's super-extra-lickably-delicious. Rich, savory, balanced broth that's all oceany and hearty without being chokingly thick (see yelp.com/biz/sams-chowde… ) And I'm gonna have to second that declaration, and also clarify that the crab cakes are EVEN BETTER. Crunchy outside & moist, flaky, tender inside...just purrrfect with the red pepper tartar sauce, lemon, shredded romaine, and maybe even a dash of Tabasco. Total treat to eat up under the sun at the picnic tables looking across the marina. Don't even think about leaving Bodega Bay without getting these!

Dude, fresh cleaned and cooked crab for $2.49 a pound?!?!?! AMAZING!!!! We found this place while cruising down by the water this past weekend in Bodega Bay. We were looking for fresh crab to buy and we found it. They pack it up and give the whole crabs (not cracked, but cleaned and cooked) to you to go if you want. They are very qucik as well and you just walk up and pay. The crabs were delicious! We came back again on Sunday before we left and we all took them to go. To give you an idea of how cheap it is - I got 3 large crabs for under $15! Beat that! I also tried the clam chowder and it was thick, rich, and delicious. Word to crabs!!

Hmm, Bodega Bay is not at all like I pictured it to be... Honestly I had no idea it was basically a road right next to water, with some docked boats, and maybe like a couple small time restaurants. Hmm. Our trusty Yelp app and my industrious Ford Expedition driving led us right up to Spud Point. High ratings, featuring the kinds of seafood we dig... Early morning raid on Spud Point, why not? My brother got the last of the Manhattan style red chowder, which tasted almost like a kind of bouillabasse -- chock full of sweet and savory tomatoes, salted to perfection and served with oyster crackers. The other boys and I opted for the New England style white chowder, which was damn good -- maybe not Splash Cafe good, but the broth was more along those thick lines than the thin watery base at Swan in SF. Also served with the witty bitty cwackers. Some of the boys opted for the crab sandwich, which was delish on its own, and the lobster roll, which also stood well -- but neither one was orgasm-inducing. UNTIL. Drum roll please... Get the smoked salmon. Don't touch it unless you want your fingers to smell like smoke for most of the day. It's more of that sweeter style, so definitely get them to toast some bread and throw in some cream cheese for you (don't even bother getting the bagels, just go straight for the good buttery stuff). Thank me later. I did love the sandwiches that the boys ordered, but nothing could beat my smoked salmon/white chowder combo. I'm in love. Service is very... how do you say? Ah yes. Real. Don't expect the world -- I mean it's a functional fishery -- so not a whole lot of small talk or extraneous laughter, but hey, we got helped, they got money, all is well with the world. Highly recommended hole-in-the-wall with all outdoor seating, especially if you're into the seafood stuff.

Don't show up even close to closing as they are not willing to take care of customers. Place closes at 5 but pushing people away at 4:45.

What a great little place! Isolated, very local, great ingredients, friendly staff, not too expensive. They have pictures of many local fishing boats on their walls. You get the strong sense that they are very connected with the community. The shack itself is about ten feet wide with a few tables in front so you can I've only been once but I will certainly add this to future Sonoma trips. It had been recommended to me by people at Freestone Winery not far away. I had their crab sandwich which was really good. It was 99% fresh fresh crab and 1% mayonaise. The bread could have been better but I understand that this is not a priority for most people. It would have been better with a home made mayonaise but again, most people think that mayonaise can only be made in a factory. Either way, I enjoyed it very much. I also ordered their clam chowder which I enjoyed back at my hotel room. As I was about to pay, out came a big tray of freshly smoked wild salmon. So I got some of that too. The smokiness was powerful and smelled great.

We had a group of 6 vacationing this past week in Bodega Bay. Found this place, saw the lines on a Sunday and decided to try it on Monday. The line was much smaller and moved fast. Perfect clam chowder - lots of clams, combined with great herbs and spices in a chowder not too thick or thin. My (authentic) 1/4 lb. crab sandwich was tasty: not too much sauce. Our group loved it so much, they went back the next day. Thanks for the enjoyable cuisine Spud Point! Be seeing you on our next visit...

Came here last weekend and heard amazing reviews about their clam chowder so my friends and I decided to try it. Trust me, it doesn't disappoint. Best clam chowder I've ever had. I even brought it home to let my dad try. Fair warning, it has a lot of garlic and a lot of butter so if you're not into that, you might not like it. I, on the other hand, love that about it. It gets pretty crowded so be prepared for that. It's worth the wait though, trust me. I hope to come back soon!

I keep coming back to Spud Point for a very good reason. Their small location is a quintessential crab shack on the west shore of Bodega Bay and uses fresh local seafood to make basic, but excellent food. Weekends can be crazy busy, but this place is wonderfully easy on a weekday. There is no parking at the restaurant, so you will have to walk a bit to get here. The layout is simple. Limited outdoor seating only with counter service inside. They are famous for their clam chowder which contains a lot of garlic and bacon. I love this, but the flavor may be too much for some. Their crab sandwich is the real star here with fresh sweet crab delicately tossed with a light sauce served on a toasted bun. I will drive here just for this sandwich, especially on a cold winter day when the Dungeness is in season. I lack the patience to wait until 1:00 PM to sample the crab cakes, but maybe one day. My recommendation is to grab your food and continue down the road to Bodega Head and a great view of the Pacific Ocean. Life is just better watching the waves crash against the shore while devouring some of the best crab in the area.

We really like this place. Downsides: Very small space, can be crowded (especially on weekends). Limited seating (and all outdoor, so cold and inclement weather are not good). Somewhat limited menu. Upsides: The line moves quickly, even when crowded. Friendly staff. Good food. Order can be "to go." Credit card accepted. Order at the counter, get a number, and pick up order when number is called. Good sandwiches -- tri tip is more like a BBQ pulled beef, and delicious. Great tuna salad (with bits of pepperoncini -- not overly spicy, but be warned). Good crab -- pretty basic. WE even like the rolls that the sandwiches are on. Pasta and bean salads available pre-packed. Chips and sodas. The chowder -- many people RAVE about the chowders (red and white). I found the red very tasty, but very garlicky. The white is less garlicky and also very tasty. But I don't do garlic well. So I pass on the chowders. (Though I did try both.) This is my personal taste. If there wasn't so much garlic, they would be great (imo). We have yet to have crab cakes, which are only available on weekends and sell out fast (so I've heard). Tasty home-made caramels and caramel corn -- some of the best I've had. We've eaten here several times this year. And we look forward to going back.

Well the clam chowder was YUMMO! Even had some sand for authenticity! It was rich, hearty, hot & chocked full of clams and potatoes, perfectly cooked. Cute little hole in the wall. Packed down the street with patrons waiting river a taste- there was a guy strumming a lovely time in his guitar in the promenade area. Staff was not overly friendly or talkative- but then again, that's not what we were there for. Thanks for a tasty test in a cold foggy day- just what the doctor ordered!

Drove in on a rainy day to try the clam chowder. The large bowl/cup was much appreciated, very garlicky and buttery, with big pieces of clam. I was pretty full from eating a half dozen oysters next door at Fisherman's Cove but it really hit the spot. Outdoor seating only, which when raining gets a bit tricky. Not too busy due to the weather and it being a midsummer-weekday. I'm glad I tried the chowder here, if I had more room I'd try the crab too.

  • Brice H.

Awesome clam chowder, awesome crab sandwich, friendly service, great outdoor picnic table eating spaces right on the bay. Come early or be prepared to spend a good amount of time waiting in line. Saw a reviewer below who knocked stars off because it was raining outside and this place didn't offer enough indoor seating. Seriously? I can't even... It's a small mom and pop food stand with picnic tables in a small town by the Bay, and I would eat here even in a hail storm, especially to support the owners and their community of fishermen.

Our 1st time here. Clam Chowder and Crab Sandwich on point! Generous serving of real crab meat on a toasted roll and piping hot thick and savory chowder with tender pieces of crab and potatoes. Husby and I ordered packaged drinks for lunch. Service was o.k. And could be better. Lady behind counter seemed tired and impatient. I asked for a cup of ice because I couldn't drink soda straight without ice. She abruptly answered that they don't provide ice for any of their drinks. Can you simply give me a cup? Not very accommodating considering we just spent $45 on a lunch for 2 people. It's a bit pricey without much frill or added fries or veggies, let alone a cup of ice. I'll come back for the food anytime but service could use customer satisfaction training.

Clam chowder is good. I'll give you that much, but I just don't understand why people brag about the crab sandwich. I can eat that if I have to. I had much better crab sandwiches from many places. This place is just not it. Food 6/10, service 6/10, price 6/10

Their clam chowder and crab sammies are the BEST! The drive here in long (esp if you encounter accidents) but it is worth it. Fresh fresh fresh seafood and quick service. There was even some live music playing :)

When the local park ranger at Bodega Bay said she eats her clam chowder from here, and they won best local chowder on the bay, we had to stop! This was our third chowder we had in Cali and it was pretty tasty, might be the best ever... I really have to give one star off just because there is NOWHERE to legally park, and it is cash only.. but tasty chowdahhh!

  • Cindi B.

The chowder here is delicious! The tables out front were very clean and our chowder was full of clams and potatoes. I can't wait to go back and try more of the items on their menu!

I'm from New England so I've had a lot of clam chowder in my life, and this one is, hands down, the best I have ever had. Worth driving a few hours out here just to have the chowder! And the crab cakes were phenomenal.

Best crab sandwich Best crab cakes Best clam chowder Visited them on a warm Labor Day weekend so line was long but it moved quickly. Love the place and next time I'll have to get two of everything.

Stopped in on Saturday, right before they were closing so they told us everything had to be togo. Not a problem since we were driving over to bodega head anyways. Ordered 2 crab sandwiches and 2 clam chowders. Both were soooo tasty and full of flavor. 30 minutes later the soup was still hot, buttery, peppery and full of clams. I definitely think the chowder is the best in town and I've had my share of chowder in the area. The sandwiches were yummy too on a toasted roll. They aren't huge so make sure you get a cup of soup with it to fill you up.

We were right at the corner of the Bodega Bay Fisherman's Festival and we were looking for food with our growling tummy's. So at this point, everything is going to be good no matter what! So of course, we went on Yelp and found Spud. Finding the place It's fairly easy to spot, open area right in the middle of the road. Driving into the Bodega Bay, its on your right. It is however small but I think hard to miss only because there's usually a small crowd of people there. In regards to parking, its pretty much park any where on the street. They aren't marked but you can safely park there, I believe :P. They do have 3 ? parking spots right next to their picnic tables, if you want to get into one of those spots. The wait time So as soon as we got there, we noticed 2 other couples standing in line. It moved pretty fast. When it was our turn, we ended up ordering the Crap sandwich and the seafood sandwich with clam chowder. Total time from after the order to our number being called was probably less than 5 minutes. Bathroom Of course the gf had to use the bathroom when we ordered. Bathroom is just across the street, right by the boat docking area. So just cross the street and to the right. Bathroom that day was pretty decent, not so clean but not as bad as you may think. So be warned!! Food I thought the food was pretty decent but the clam chowder was exceptional good. Clam chowder wasn't all too salty with huge chunks of clam chowder stuff lol. As for the sandwich, it was very tasty but mainly it was because of all the sauce. There are however huge chunks of crab and shrimps. For $12 however, its actually a pretty small sandwich. Did it fill my tummy?? not really. Would I come back again? yea probably.

Came up on a rainy day to try the clam chowder, heard it has a high rating within the community. Place: This is not a place to go on a rainy day, unless you are taking your order to go. It is a small place with only outdoor seating. When I was there people were crowded standing under the awning. It wouldn't look crowded if people were sitting down and not all trying to stay dry eating their chowder. Food: Heard much about the chowder so I had to order it. The chowder was very flavorful, had fresh pieces of calms, you can taste the garlic with every scoop. Sign above the door "Caution our Calm Chowder can be Addictive" TRUTH was seen. Why only a 3 stars maybe I came on the wrong day. I wasn't expecting rain during the summer. I was seated at the end of the bench the only dry spot. Having people waiting for their order, watching you eat. Get more pop up tents or awning so people can come and stay dry without feeling too crowded.

Delicious clam chowder, especially with that fresh loaf of sourdough. Crab sandwich was great as well, but at nearly $12 for a sandwich and no sides it feels a little pricey.

Can't believe people actually rated this place based on the weather! That's not "yelping" folks. Anyway first time here and loooooooved it! Such s cool setting with a beautiful view. Yes, just as described by others, the line was out the door. However the staff were fast and friendly. The clam chowder is the best I've had. Scratch made and not too thick. I hate it when places use too thick of a 'rue' in their chowder. We knew it would be busy, so we took ours back to camp. It was fun talking to folks while waiting and everybody was in a good mood. Going back for sure!

We always stop by here when in Bodega. We get crab sandwiches & clam chowder. They are Sooo good. It does seem like they are putting on less crab meat, but they are still big pieces and very tasty. The clam chowder is some of the best around.

Came on Saturday at 2pm and the line was fairly long. Total time from getting in line to finish eating was roughly 45 minutes. We ordered clam chowder and the crab sandwich. The clam chowder was pretty good though not the best I've ever had. The crab sandwich was the highlight, you can tell it's really fresh. The sandwich highlights the crab meat with little sauce. Would like a little more crabmeat. There are very limited outdoor seating, and it was quite windy on our visit, just an fyi. Overall a great dining experience, and the food was worth the wait.

First time here and definitely will not be my last. I tried the clam chowder, crab sandwich, and crab cocktail; my favorite was the chowder which had a unique flavor that truly is addicting as the sign above their door claims. Unfortunately came just a week after their season for whole crabs ended but maybe next time!

    (5)
  • Brittani C.

Mmmmmmmmmmmm! All of their claims are true: Best clam chowder And Best crab sandwhiches This place is an absolute must if youre near Bodega Bay. The chowder is nuclear hot so make sure to remove the lid and give it a few minutes to cool down. It had a homey, mom and pop feel. Staff is friendly. Highly recommend!

Still a great place for an informal lunch in a great rustic setting. Yes, chowder is great. Yes, crab sandwich is OK. Only "OK" since size of bun is noticeably smaller than our last visits. That's why I've downgraded it to A-OK instead of five stars. Too bad ... Charge with tip was close to $40.00 for two sandwiches, one small chowder and a couple of soft drinks. Lots of local places offer crab sandwiches and chowder. We'll try a different place next time we travel to Bodega Bay.

We were told to come out to Spud Point for crab sandwiches on our way out to Bodega Bay, and boy were we not disappointed! The sandwich, although a bit pricey, was pretty tasty. We got there just before the rush, and on our way out the line was already pretty long. I'll be back for the clam chowder next time!

Spud Point was like a dream... I walked into Bodega Bay in a dreamy state. Everywhere was grey, save for the colors of the jackets surrounding to what seemed to be an eatery. Half rubbing my eyes, I dragged my feet towards the small restaurant with a big crowd. Nothing seemed real. $10.95 for a Crab Sandwich? They charge at least $18 everywhere else! In addition, a voice in my head repeatedly told me to order the Crab Sandwich and the Clam Chowder. I was convinced that it was some sort of a destiny for me to try the sandwich and chowder. I sat outside in the brisk air with the hot chowder in hand. As soon as the warmth of the soup touch my lips, I was pulled into a state of euphoria. The flavor of clams emerged from the soup to dance on my palette. The clams sang along inside the chowder, and it sounded like a harmonica celebrating their deliciousness. In other customer's chowder, I saw that the song of the clams transformed the chowder's color from a buttery white to a tomato red. The power of music and taste. Time for the sandwich. There were so much crab meat in between the two slices of lightly crunchy bread that I couldn't help but ponder on the number of crabs it took. I swear I heard a Krabby crying out for help as if it had fainted. I looked at my sandwich and was at once reassured that no Krabby was harmed for beast of a sandwich. The crab was at least a Kingler #pokemon The memories of a dream comes and goes and everything is a little fuzzy. I can't recall what actually happened, how I even got home, or if the whole experience was even real. But one thing's for sure, my taste buds will forever hold on to the memory of that Chowder&Sandwich. ... ... ... A Dream DEBUNKED: 1. foodkid was in a dreamy state because he had a 2 hour nap on the car ride to Bodega Bay. 2. Everything was grey because there was an overcast that day. 3. The voice in foodkid's head that told him to order the Chowder&Sandwich was actually his Cousin's, who drove him there while he napped. 4. The clams didn't sing. There was a nice man playing a Harmonica on the side for all the customers sitting outside. 5. The chowder didn't TURN red. There is a tomato-based chowder that you can order. It's VEGAN! 6. foodkid didn't actually hear a Krabby. It was the sound from a nearby Nintendo DS, where a Krabby just got KO'ed by a timely Psybeam. ***Everything detailed in the review is REAL. Just told in the perspective of foodkid feeling drowsy***

Hands down best crab sandwich I've ever, and probably will ever have in my life. It was definitely love at first bite. The crab meat is just so fresh and cold I can't explain how good it is because you've got to go try it for yourself! I love visiting bodega bay because everyone is just so kind and laid back. Thank you yelp for the great recommendation!

  • David C.

Excellent red and white chowder. White chowder was rich, with generous servings of clams, potatoes, and the perfect amount of creaminess. The red chowder had larger chunks of potato and had the perfect acidity. Fresh crab and shrimp cocktails with generous servings. Definitely a welcome place to get some great seafood. PROTIP: Crab cakes I hear are stellar but they sell out quick.

This place is heaven on earth. Everything they make is perfection! In my opinion, it is the best clam chowder in Northern California. It's the perfect balance of herbs, clam and creamy broth. Not to mention, there is NEVER a grain of sand in your soup! To me, that is the worst surprise ever. The crab sandwich is also a MUST have! Nothing like eating crab you know was caught that day! The sauce is the perfect compliment to the crab and the bread is always very fresh! Every time I've been there the line is out the door, but it moves very quickly and is definitely worth it. The staff is always very friendly and the local cat that hangs out the restaurant is quite the celebrity. If you're visiting Bodega Bay, don't miss out on this place!

  • Christina T.

I live 2 hours away from this place. While there are many chowder options nearby, I would rather drive all the way up to Spud Point if that's any indication of how awesome their chowder is. They're dry here though so don't forget to pick up a bottle of wine or some beer before you go. Don't eat your food there -- keep going up the road and you can enjoy it along the coast. Also bring a jacket as it might quite suddenly become cold and foggy.

  • Nic J.

Spud point makes food that's on point. Their crab and shrimp sandwiches are awesome. They don't use too much mayonnaise and the crab and shrimp is omsk of the freshest i've had. A key component to any sandwich is quality bread and the bread they use for their sandwiches is extremely fresh and has the perfect crunch to it. Their clam chowder is also pretty solid, not sure if it's the best i've had but it's up there. This is a great place to grab a sandwich, or 3, and a cup of chowder while enjoying beautiful Bodega Bay.

Crab sandwich is delish though the price of $11.95 is a little high. Clam chowder is very good too. This is not your touristy "Fisherman's Wharf" atmosphere. It is the real deal.

  • Peggy B.

Good New England chowder. Different than usual with lots of herbs and spices. The crab sandwich is bland - expensive for a no frills, small and very little taste sandwich. Outside picnic tables with no shade butt kinda fun meeting folks from all over.

What started as my brother's favorite joint for great chowder has turned into a must stop every time I am in Bodega Bay. Because the chowder is so good, I can't say that I have extensive knowledge of the rest of the menu, but the crab sandwich is well worth the price. I like to get a round of chowders and then split the crab sandwich. The line is usually well out the door, but it moves quickly. If there's no seating at the restaurant, there are picnic tables across the street!

  • Michelle L.

The clam chowder and crab sandwich here are literally PERFECTION. Each amazing on their own... but when ordered together a match made in heaven. This place does get crowded so try to come a little earlier or later, not right at lunch time. The crabcakes were not my favorite... so stick to the sandwich and chowder.

    (5)
  • Ellie E.

Totally on point for a delicious lunch. The crab sandwich was full of flavor, and you could taste the freshness of the crab. It's served on a slightly toasted long sandwich roll, which holds up perfectly with the generous serving of crab meat. We paired the sandwiches with prepackaged pasta salads, which did help round out the meal as the sandwich on its own might not be enough. Picnic benches out front serve as the dining room, and you have mildly obstructed views of the bay and marina. No alcohol served here, but cold drinks such as the standard sodas and water. The gal helping us was friendly, and took the time to direct us on some places to see and do in the area. Visited 6/12

The four of us hated the clam chowder and we wound up throwing it away, it had a weird spice that ruined it, even though we each only had a few bites, two felt queasy afterwards. The cold crab sandwich was just ok... If that is not bad enough, seating is on communal benches packed in a tinny spot next to the busy road. The only think I can think is there are a lot of fake reviews on here to get the rating, as it seems like a crappy tourist trap.

The best clam chowder and crab sandwiches in California. Not cheap, not many tables and a bit chilly (situated on the north coast), but absolutely worth a stop any time you're visiting the part of the state. Don't forget to work off a bit of that meal with a walk on the beautiful bluff trail at the end the road.

  • CW E.

The clam chowder was really good. The crab cakes were so-so, as was the crab sandwich. Nothing wrong with them -- just nothing special. My advice? Order a couple of clam chowders to go, drive 10 minutes up the coast, spread a blanket, and enjoy the meal -- it will hit the spot - especially if you grabbed a sourdough loaf from Wild Flour Bread earlier in the day!

  • Abhik P.

Best clam chowder I've ever had. Fresh ingredients, tasty, not too creamy. Also try the amazing crab sandwich. The sauce they mix in with the crab compliments it very well without overpowering the crab. Be prepared for a long wait. We went on Thursday @ 2:30 during the Holidays and it took us around 30m to get our food.

Was strolling along the pier and in passing, a few of us all shared one clam chowder. Had to go back the next day and each of us ordered one because this stuff is like crack. Accompanied by the crab sandwich, it just don't get any better. Def have to go back and try the crab cakes next. Skip the healthier red version too....

Keeping it simple--it's all about the crab sandwiches! You can just taste the fresh, sweet goodness. On a gorgeous day, it's quite enjoyable sitting on the benches across from the marina. It's really the only spot with activity on this side of the bay, everyone just has to pause and take a look as they drive by. Dock one star for price--I'd expect these prices in SF, but not this far off the beaten path. Too bad there isn't one of these closer to home....

Somewhat in line with others here...clam chowder: Off the charts. Literally off the charts. More in a second. Service: not friendly. Let me just say, service does not always to be great, or even good. It's just not a component of every experience. You could go to a great hot dog stand and the service should not impact your experience one way or the other. However, in this instance...it unfortunately did. Did not affect the taste of our chowder (which I will get to)...but the experience was bad. Real bad. We arrived at 4:30...they close at 5:00. They have about 4 picnic tables out front and there were 2-3 people sitting there. The woman behind the counter (at 4:40) said we could not sit outside at the picnic tables because that area is closed. Look, I understand needing and wanting to leave at 5, but there is a much better way to handle it than just telling people they are closed outside. Everyone has a bad day...I get that...but this was just the wrong to handle it. But, the chowder is fantastic. Literally top of the line type stuff. Sometimes chowder can be far too creamy, and this is just perfect consistency. There is a great blend of spices and the portions are good for the price. Regardless of the experience, I would make a point to go back. The place is that good.

We came down highway 1 during the start of crab season. Perfect place to stop by for lunch on the way home. Chowder was fresh, crab roll was super meaty and delicious! By lunch time, there was already an hour way for the crabs-- I would have called earlier to save some before we left the hotel. Line's usually out the door, outdoor seating (so bring something warm to wear!) Completely worth the pit-stop!

This place is overpriced with a very limited menu .the chower is Just OK.....made with canned clams and tastes like a potatoe soup base mix.. it tastes chalky ..and a small cup with a teeny bag of oyster crackers is all you get for $8.... but reative to real homemade chowder it is sad....it is a tourist rip off with an age old sign in front saying " the best chowder in Bodega" which needs to be up dated.... it tastes best when you are starving

They really do have the best clam chowder! The only bad thing about this place is the seating! There's no indoor seating! And it can be a bit chilly in the fall!

Like it!!!! Little shack with Gigantic Goodness! Clam chowaddahhhhh and crab cakes were spot on. The Chowder was quite flavorful, I wanted it to be thicker but I know some people don't appreciate that. A little expensive to be in the middle of no where but well worth it. Will be back.....Crab Sammy next time. Also great to take your dogs as they have picnic tables out front. Love the singer....tacky....loved it.....loved song selection...come on how could you complain about that it was Classic (5 Stars for the Singer). The dude gave me a big smile than and now! Meant to tip him but forgot bc he jetted off some where so I am writing him mad props as his Tip.

We came here on a Saturday afternoon and waited in line for about 20 minutes. We did get our food to go since there was no seating and we were staying in Bodega Bay. We ordered the clam chowder and crab sandwich. We wanted crab cakes, but they were out :( The clam chowder was the best we had in Bodega over a two day period. The broth was creamy, seasoned perfectly with the right amount of bacon and potatoes and lots of clams. The crab sandwich was drenched in mayonnaise and that ruined it for us. It was also a very small sandwich for $11.00. They also sell whole cooked crabs, but they were out of those as well. Bottom line, it's worth the wait in line for the clam chowder.

Very good clam chowder but if you are in the Petaluma area Pete's Henny Penny make a very similar chowder but usually only on Fridays. Crab sandwich was OK but a little bland. Parking and finding a place to sit can be hard. I think is I was a local I would come here often and get it to go.

Limited seating. The menu is not huge, but I've heard you go for the chowder and crab sandwich. Three types of sandwiches are available: crab ($10.95), shrimp($8.95) and bbq tri-tip($6.75). They also offer hot dogs, chili dogs and clam chowder; both red and white. They also have shrimp or crab cocktail. Crab cakes are offered on Saturday and Sunday, so we missed the crab cakes. They also have seasonal items such as smoked salmon. We had the crab sandwich which was closed face with a thousand island-type of dressing. Bread was crunchy toasty and the crab meat was cold. Crab meat tasted so "freshingly" good and thought the dressing could be cut back. I thought it was good, but I've definitely had better. The clam chowder was creamy and had a bit of spicy heat and I thought it was good. The place is definitely busy and believe it lives on reputation more than anything else. I've had crab sandwiches in many places and think for the price, its kind of small, although I will give credit in that the crab meat was outstanding. I could have easily eaten a sandwich and an order of chowder myself. Would I go back if in the area? Probably. As a foodie, would I go out of my way to go there? No.

In Bodega Bay land full of expensive restaurants, non-existent fast food restaurants, and a lack of an actual grocery store, it's hard to find reasonably priced food at a decent quality. Spud Point Crab Company totally bucks that trend through their crab sandwich and famous red clam chowder. I didn't get the homemade crab cakes because they were sold out just after noon time, but I'm sure those were delicious too. With a mix of garlic, tomatoes, clams, oregano, onions, and a bit of a spicy aftertaste kick, this clam chowder goes down in the books as one of my favorites. Make sure to take a walk out on the long pier farther down Westshore Road for a nice scenic stroll. Note: there is only outdoor seating so on a rainy/cold day, I can see it being pretty miserable eating outside

very nice peppery clam chowder, possibly the best I can remember having. solid crab sandwich, too, whose sauce is not overly heavy or mayonnaisey. a good pit stop wherever you are headed out here.

Small place, small menu - GREAT clam chowder. I have not tried anything else there, but the clam chowder is probably the best I have ever had. Right across the street from the marina, so you can sit and watchthe fishing boats. Bring a jacket - it does get chilly out there

Nowhere near as good chowder as made by the superlative Pike Place Chowder in Seattle, WA...but that's a long drive up north! This is a tiny take-out shack with 3 parking spaces. Chowder is nicely done, especially if you are a Snow's canned chowder fan and think it should always be thickened. My DH loved Spud Pt's chowder, as it had a nice spicy kick in the aftertaste. Me, I'm strictly a do-not-dare-thicken-my-chowder partisan, so I infinitely prefer Sea Salt/Berkeley's lovely, bacon-infused, properly liquid chowder. I thought Spud Pt's chowder was better than most, just a little too much dried thyme and mild, almost tasteless clams. Sandwiches are ordinary fluffy white bread rolls. Shrimp salad is better than crab salad. Crab cakes are ONLY on weekends.

This Review is based on Customer Service - The Chowder and Crab Cakes are honestly some of the best I've had. I love the food at this place so there's no problem with that. However - Generally when your paying as much as you pay for anything at this place, you'd except great service. A clam chowder cup, yes just a cup, with bread is gonna run you over $10. It's served nicely with a stiff face, and a "thanks for your money now get out" type of attitude. I've come here for 3 years now as I visit Bodega Bay every summer to get away from running my business. I've probably eaten here with the lady 10+ times. Not once have I been greeted with a smile and a hello. Not once have I been thanked for keeping these grumpy people in business. Not once have I been able to catch them on a "good" day. I would expect customer service like this from a restaurant that under pays their workers and that worker has no tie to the restaurant other than a paycheck. This place is ran by a family, and they always seem to be having a bad day! haha. Food 4-5 stars Customer Service - 1/2 stars Work on being personable with your customers. I won't be coming back to spud point to grab a bite anytime soon, not on this getaway or the next.

Really tasty great place to stop and grab a quick bit a little bit pricy for what you are getting but that shouldn't deter really delicious chowder and on my way up the coast it was a great treat on my drive

I love little shacks where you grab some food and sit out with the locals and eat, rain or shine. Great crab sandwiches and crabcakes. The crab just oozes freshness. This is what I will return for. The new-england style "award winning" chowder is above-average. It's full of chunks of stuff, but slightly bland. The prices are a bit high for the portions. Roughly $11 for a 1/4th pound crab sandwich, or about the same in 2 small crabcakes. It's tourist prices. At 6.75 the chowder ain't that good. You can get A+ new england chowder at a nice restaurant for that price. At 40-50 degrees on a foggy or raining day in Bodega, some hot chowder + tabasco is totally worth $6.75. Repeat: Yes. Sammich for sure, chased down with a crabcake if they have them. Chowder - only if I'm feeling cold or generous.

This is pretty much the #1 place for seafood in Bodega Bay. Do not be fooled by other imposters. I'm not sure I would drive all the way out here from SF just to eat the seafood when Half Moon Bay is much closer, but I was really looking forward to eating here when I was camping nearby. On the far side of Bodega Bay, the cafe is situated next to the fishing marina. You order inside and sit outside on nice clean picnic tables to eat. The view is nice. The ambiance is very relaxed. The crab sandwiches here are really good. The clam chowder is also pretty good, though I'm a little undecided by the thyme they use (it's very strong). Be forewarned that the "Best Clam Chowder in Bodega Bay" does not come cheap - $7 for a cardboard takeaway container. You can also get fresh crab cooked in the pot outside, however, they only do this to order, so expect to wait 45min to 1hour for it to be ready.

After reading some of the reviews on here... i still tried the place... for those that didn't get any crab.... YOU MISSED OUT.... sucka~~~~~ it was lightly raining, but shit... that didn't stop me from eating outside.... OH.... the clam chowder.... i really think this is the best clam chowder i ever had.... sucka~~~~~ ahhahahahah

  • Meredith A.

Crab was fine, for those who got it. Crab cakes were gone. Chowder was mediocre. Sandwiches (shrimp or crab) were disgusting. A glob of mayonnaise-laden seafood on a white bun. No lettuce, tomato, nothing. And I paid $7 for that? Nope. Not again.

Damn good New England style clam chowder. Didn't try the red variety. Will do that next time for sure. Perfectly balanced chowder. Excellent base, delicate but not wimpy. Properly sized components and clearly fresh ingredients. Worth the drive.

We knew it was good when we had to wait in line for quite a while...well worth the wait. I enjoyed the crab sandwich and my husband a tri-tip sandwich and then we shared the clam chowder. Everything was great!

  • Rachel Y.

We felt like we had to stop after seeing the line outside. it seemed like the place to be! Crab sandwich, $10.95 Lots of delicious, fresh crab in there!! But the sauce? Seemed like basic thousand island, and a little too much of it. I think these guys need to step up their game a touch.

Salt-of-life counter service, picnic style family seating crab right off the boat -cooked steamed & cleaned, $3.99/lb What more could you ask for? Chowder was DELISH. Not too thick, spicy, and rich. Excellent for west coast. Although actual clams were so-so (who eats chowder for the clams anyways). Rest of food - not cheap. But look around at the marina atmosphere, the Annabelle pulling in loaded with crab, notice there are no fish guts under your feet so cozy up to that chowdah & breathe a sigh of contentment.

This place definitely lives up to the reviews- it is plain and simple good food! We intended to stop off for a "light lunch" maybe share a crab roll and some chowder. Well that plan was lost in the shuffle of 2 pints of chowder (plus one purchased to go) , a crab sandwich, a shrimp sandwich and crab cakes! We were stuffed, but it felt good because our bellies were full of fresh quality food not greasy junk. So I will start with the crab sandwich- very simple and the freshness of the crab cannot be beat! The shrimp sandwich was equally delicious. The clam chowder was a spicy twist on a classic recipe and contained all the right elements- tender clams, red potatoes and the addition of some herbs and I do believe I tasted fresh garlic. Mouthwatering! Even the little Keebler oyster crackers were a flaky/crispy addition. The crab cakes- now these were a tasty treat, moist, spicy and with a yummy red pepper sauce for dipping. This place is the epitome of what an family owned & operated restaurant should be- folks who truly care about the quality and customer satisfaction. They are nice folks- Tony & Carol. Her warm smile and his anecdotes about the family's history and crab fishing only add to the experience of an authentic seaside meal.

One star for being a casual mom and pop type place, and for at least attempting to be a crab shack. One star for having picnic tables outside so that no one cared that we had just come from the beach and were all wet and sandy. ZERO stars for the food, including the lack thereof. Out of crab cakes and crab? Isn't this a CRAB place? As with another reviewer, I watch an order of cracked crab and crab cakes whisk out the door so I enthusiastically say "I'll have that!" Only to hear "oh, that was our last order, we're out now" ??? Let me get this straight, you're not going to sell me the reasonably priced crab (cracked crab), but you'll sell me the expensive crab (crab sandwich) ? huh? I'm feeling a trap. My best guess is that every 5th customer that gets the cracked crab and crab cakes. My enthusiasm for this place took even more of a dive while we're sharing a picnic table with 4 others, each one with a basket of fresh cracked crab, making all the yummy noises, and I finally get my $11 crab sandwich, and I immediately feel like crying. I paid WHAT for this little piece of bread? WHERE is the crab? It is NOT a crab sandwich, it is a CRAB SALAD SANDWICH. An $11 crab sandwich would mean sourdough bread, mayo ON the bread and large lumps of pure crab in the middle. This was palm sized dry Costco-buns with some dollops of CRAB SALAD in the middle, emphasize SALAD. MAYO mixed with alittle bit of crab is a SALAD (very tasty crab, yes, but it is still a CRAB SALAD SANDWICH). We also got the "tri-tip" sandwich to split, mostly just to try it and 'cause we love us a good tri tip. But again, we were JIPPED when what arrived was a CHIPPED BEEF sandwich (brown sauce with bits of beef mixed up in it). Oh and again, small Costco bun. Very disgusting and NOT a steak sandwich AT ALL. $70 for 4 people and we DID NOT GET ANY CRACKED CRAB and we were still hungry afterwards. Sorry, I certainly won't be going out of my way to visit here again. I drove here so, so happy that maybe, finally there was a proper crab shack in/near the Bay Area....alas......NOT...drove away disappointed and sad....and hungry.

I had been looking and waiting to try the best clam chowder I've ever had.. Well we found it! Glad we decided to make the stop! Guess we were lucky, served very fast, wish they weren't out of the sandwiches or cakes but I can imagine how delicious those were. We got a seat in the picnic table on a beautiful day! Keep up the deliciousness and hope to be back again someday!

On my quest for better crab cakes we stopped here for lunch. Unfortunately they only have crab cakes on the weekends, and we stopped during the week. I opted for the crab sandwich and some clam chowder instead. They were excellent! This place is wild, just a shack on the side of the road with two small parking spots and picnic tables only on the outside. Inside there is room for maybe 4 people, 6 if you are feeling friendly. We stopped on a day that was quiet, and no line. Service was quick and we got our food to go. We took everything up to the lookout at the park on Bodega Head and ate overlooking to water. Unbelievable! The food was excellent and the view was breathtaking. One of the best lunches I have ever had. I would definitely recommend this restaurant, it is a must-visit.

What a gem, right on the bay. My husband finds the BEST food. I had the crab sandwich and my husband had clam chowder. The chowder was the BEST, spicy, creamy and abundant amount of clams. The crab sandwich was loaded with crabmeat...imagine that...no skimping!!! The food is cooked outside. Instead of eating at the restaurant we took the food around the bend to Bodega Head and ate lunch looking over the ocean. We highly recommend this restaurant.

09.22.12 with 1 other We tried the clam chouder and crab roll. the clam chouder was good, it had a lot of clams and a lot of flavor - a bit too peppery/onion taste for me, but it was still good, my friend really enjoyed it. the crab roll was full of fresh crab meat, but it tasted plain, like it was missing something. This place seemed very popular as we showed up around 2:30, as a late lunch for us, and it was still busy. small, place, with outdoor seating.

Best clam chowder ever. Period. Crab cakes too. All good. I could have used some non-dairy creamer in the coffee though. Don't expect white tablecloths and waiters with dishtowels over their arms. This is rural Sonoma County. They know what really counts!

  • Justin M.

Got here late, was pumped on some crab cakes but alas, they sell out quickly. Had to settle on a crab sandwich and clam chowder. The crab sandwich is delicious, great flavor and the roll was quite nice. Not even close to being able to fill up a normal persons stomach long for more than an hour or w, so at $10 don't expect to call it quits. The clam chowder was very good, big chunks of clam and it was a nice consistency, not too thick or too watery. Not in my top 5 though, based on the reviews that's what I was expecting but still a good chowder none the less. Definitely worth stopping in for the sandwich though, and next time I'll make sure to get there early enough for the crab cakes.

My husband and I stopped there on our recent trip to Bodega Bay based solely on the statements that their clam chowder was voted best in the area for the last 8 years. In our opinion in was far from the best. It was too spicy for our tastes. In addition the seating was minimal at best so we took ours to go.

With awesome New England style clam chowder and pretty good crab sandwiches, this place is like a west coast edition of a Maine lobster pound, which is a rare find. The clam chowder, flavored with herbs, and a just-right dose of garlic was the best I have had in a long time. The clams has a little bit of sand in them, but that just supports the authenticity. It was really a memorable soup, and my wife who typically can't stand chowder liked it as well. I do wish I had some sourdough to go with it--when you have a good dish you need a nice bread to go with it, not just the boring packaged oyster crackers they give you. We also had Dungeness crab sandwiches which were a lot like a New England lobster roll. The fluffy roll itself was good, but I was not a huge fan of the special sauce they used with the crab...it didn't pack much flavor, which with Dungeness is generally a good thing because it did not overshadow the crab meat--but then why have the sauce at all instead of just a little butter? The sandwich was still good though, and filled with good quality crab. This setting is scenic, right across the road from Bodega Bay's Spud Point marina filled with crabbing vessels and buildings with crab traps stacked outside. Inside the shack where you get the crab are photos of local ships. They also have other stuff on the menu like caramel corn, tri tip sandwiches, etc. But we stuck to the seafood. The only place I saw to sit for lunch is outside, so if the winds pick up you may just want to take your food to go and eat someplace more sheltered from the elements.

We stopped for a snack so I had the shrimp cocktail. Please note: BAY shrimp. You know, the tiny little guys. I prefer the bay shrimp to the prawns but I was shocked to find they put pickle in their cocktail sauce. That ruined it a little bit. My girlfriend enjoyed her crab sandwich (although she did mention that it was a little too wet and the roll is cold- not freshly toasted on a grill). The service was fast and polite. Overall, a fun outing that left me happy we had supported a local business.

Yummy clam chowder and the crab sandwich lived up to its reputation. Good news: we beat the lunchtime rush as we got in right at noon and avoided the lines that quickly formed afterwards. Bad news: they don't take orders for crab cakes until 1pm. Doh!

We tried Spud Point based on the positive reviews, but I'm sorry, I just don't understand why it's rated so highly. Maybe I didn't order the right thing. We had a cup of clam chowder for $6.75, and a crab sandwich. The chowder was pretty good, but not spectacular. The crab on the sandwich was definitely fresh, but it was hard to taste through all the mayo. And it came on a generic hoagie roll, so it was pretty tiny. For $10.95, I expect more. We decided to go next door to Fisherman's Cove to try their crab sandwich as well, so we could compare the two. Spud point does not get my vote. The focaccia bread at Fisherman's Cove is much better, as is the flavor of the sandwich. It's a dollar more over there, but worth it.

Wow!!! First of all Lisa and all her staff are just awesome! They are all very helpful and friendly. The best crab I have EVER eaten. I watched it go from the pot to cold water to my ice chest! The crab was not only delicate, but was the sweetest I have ever tasted! The chowder is not typical by any means, it is out of this world! There is a good reason why it's won best chowder in Bodega Bay for the last 8 years. Nice chunks of clams, thick and creamy...YUM! Would also highly recommend the crab sandwich as well, lots of crab and a nice crunchy roll. Forget the lettuce and things that take a way from all that wonderful crab, Spud Point Crab Co. knows how to do it right! And if that's not enough, they make the best hot dog in town. Something for everyone! If I could yelp 10 stars I would!

Finally! We made it there for weekend crab cakes. Even though our day on the coast got us there at closer to 1:45 than to 1pm (they tell you to get there at 1pm before all the cakes sell out), we were lucky! There was live music and a line out the door. I was nervous we wouldn't have enough chow with only two smallish cakes and one red chowder to share, but the food was to die for - adequately rich and satisfying. I've also been there for sandwiches and soup. I think the portions are appropriate - not super-sized but for the quality and richness of the seafood anything more would overdo it. PS - Red chowder's the BEST!

The chowder is delicious and has a unique flavor. I liked the small chunks of potatoes but would prefer more clam. The crab cocktail and crab sandwich were good because the crab was good but otherwise weren't anything special. The crab cakes ran out just before we stepped up to the counter, so we'll have to get there earlier next time. The San Franciscan in me was slightly appalled at how much waste is created by all the paper baskets, plastic utensils, etc. that get thrown away with each order.

You came to Bodega for funky, picnic table with strangers, on the water, open air, kick ass crab cakes didn't you? This is it. You want better you have to go to Maryland's eastern shore. Family run and run well. Tasty, straight up and a bargain. Chowder off da hook. An essential part of the Bodega Head run.

Good crab sandwich but very small. Not worth $10.95. Clam cowder is some of the best I've had . At $6.75 a cup it's a bit pricey too. Also found a shell in the soup.

When they say here CAUTION OUR CLAM CHOWDER IS ADDICTIVE they mean it!! We go here every time we travel up the coast and have never been disappointed in anything we have ordered there! By far the BEST CLAM CHOWDER and Crab Sand which ever! Not a fancy place with just a few picnic tables outside and a wonderful man playing guitar and singing but don't let this little hole in the wall fool you as you WILL NEVER have better crab and clam chowder anywhere! The people are amazing the view is fabulous of all the boats and seals and the price can not be beat! If you decide to pass this place up well go ahead that is more for us !!

This place was so good! We had the crab sandwich, shrimp sandwich, and clam chowder. Everything was great. I wish they had crab cakes all day :( I was expecting the sandwiches to be hot for some reason... None the less, still great. They should get a bigger place ;) lol definitely a fan!

If you can't eat gluten, everything but the crab or shrimp cocktail will make you sick. Crab cocktail was yummy, but when food makes my mouth bleed your positive turns into a frowny face. There were a couple crab shell bits in my crab that sliced the roof of my mouth and my tongue up pretty gnarly. But at least the crab tasted great. On crab taste, I would give it 5 stars but minus one for the injuries. My boyfriend got the clam chowder and had a similar "Oh this is awesome! Wait, what the hell is this?!" moment. First bite of chowder was great. Then he had that expression on his face like "I smell poo" which turned out to be "There's sand in this!". He took another bite and the sand gritted along his teeth. Another, and it was the same. We drove away shaking our fists at the place. I doubt we'll make the trip there, we can get awesome crab in San Francisco. We thought that since we were in Bodega Bay we would get seafood because it only seemed natural. We didn't know this place was a little hole in the wall which isn't bad. We welcomed the site seeing that a lot of the places in Bodega looked like places we weren't dressed for. But it made us sad, so we wont journey to it again.

Maybe it was because I had the hugest clam chowder craving ever while I was in Bodega Bay but this was the best New England Clam Chowder I've ever had. It was flavorful and had tons of perfectly cooked clams in it. On a brisk cold day this totally hit the spot. If i had a bigger appetite I would've ordered tons more.

BEST CLAM CHOWDER IN BODEGA BAY 9 YEARS IN A ROW!!!!! and it is literally to die for. I love the crab and shrimp sandwitchs. The service is always fast and the food is always fresh. The owners Carol and Tony are some of the nicest and kindest people around. The food is some of the best here in bodega bay, I always tell me friends and clients to head down to spud point, grab some chowder and go to the bodega head to watch some whales! Definitley a place to stop when you are going to bodega bay!

As a kid in the middle of nowhere, I knew places like this existed somewhere out there on coasts & well-traveled by world traveler roads. If I closed my eyes to create a situation of the perfect crab chowder outing it would have: boats in a marina in a dock yard, stacked crab traps across the street, a small shack with boiling crabs in pots outside next to a guy with a dog, playing a harmonica and an amplified guitar, with picnic tables to eat the freshest, most complex crab chowder out there. And, on a small side road tucked away from anything other than a guy standing in a tiny outhouse-sized shack selling live crabs out of a cooler. Both times I've been here, I really step back to see that it's really a simple, old world set up that is at the core of how charming this experience is. And, while the crab roll is really good and fresh, all that's really needed for two is two cups of chowder. The best chowder. The chowder that served by the hundreds a day I'm sure, and remains perfect.

Crab sandwich is pretty plain - but has fresh crab, and that's hard to beat! Clam chowder - not to thick and heavy, but lots of flavor according to my friends. Crab special - 1/2 crab with lemon for 5 bucks. Lots of work but yummy. Shrimp sandwich - big fat 0 stars. It was terrible. It was little defrosted bay shrimp in mayo. No veggies on it, nothing. Just awful. The singer guy sounded like elevator music. Tacky.

The best place is Bodega Bay to get chowder and crab. Chowder comes in a couple of different styles. The crab sandwiches are really good...just crab. The place is tiny and they aren't trying to expand. A few tables outside and someone playing music on the weekends. The service is really lousy, but I don't need much but my chowder.

I have been to Spud Point a couple of times now and every time I wonder if what I ate was actually worth the wait. I'm not sure they are providing anything spectacular, let's just leave it at that. Lines are long and seating is limited. I have tried the clam chowder and the crab sandwich. First of all, the price is way too high for what you get. I mean the crab is good but it is just crab with a little dressing on a small roll for $10.95! I could have bought a whole crab and a loaf of bread! I love crab, but really the sandwich is boring. $7 is more appropriate. The chowder was pretty good. Not very thick like some chowders can be. I can't remember the price but it is served in a small cup. It was tasty but not the best I have ever had and it is disappointing that you cannot order it in a bread bowl. On a side note...the type of live music being played is not fitting. They are better off having no music.

Great little hole in the wall place (literally -there is no where to eat and we ate in the car) to grab some tasty seafood. Chowder and crab sandwiches. I agree with most of the reviews here about the crab sandwiches. Being that Crab is in their name, I expected the best crab sandwich of my life. It was a very good sandwich, but it didn't make me moan in ecstasy. And yes, I have had a crab sandwich that has done that to me. The chowder was great. I had no complaints about it. It isn't spoon stand-up thick, but I liked the thinner consistency (and it is by no means watery).

Best Clam Chowder Ever! Or at least on the West Coast. Coming from New England, I know clam chowder and this is the real deal. It's rich, creamy and fresh tasting. The chowder is made with copious amounts of cream and butter to make it rich and delicious and lots of fresh, tender pieces of clam. How much butter? So much that if you wait an hour, the butter will seperate, rise to the top and you'll have to stir it back into the chowder. If you like your chowder a gelatinous, gloppy mess and tasting like it came out of a can, this isn't the place for you. The rest of the place isn't much to talk about, just a shack with little parking, a couple of picnic benches outside and the servers can be surly, but one spoonful of the chowder makes it all worth it.

Just went to Bodega Bay today since the weather's just gorgeous. We ordered the regular clam chowder, a crab sandwich and the weekend-only crab cakes. clam chowder: 4 stars. It was creamy but not too thick and lots of clams. I do think it's one of the best clam chowder around crab sandwich: 3 stars. The price for one small-ish sandwich is $10.95. I don't mind paying the price, but I didn't think it was that great. The roll was soft, and the crab wasn't as sweet as I expected. It's a slightly-above average sandwich, just not worth the 1.5hr drive from SF. crab cakes: 3 stars, maybe 3.5 stars. Again, it's average just like the crab sandwich. Freshly fried, the tartar sauce gave the crab cakes some decent flavor. I found a few tiny shells, so they need to do a better job at picking out the shells. ambience: it's a roadside hut, with picnic tables, great for a sunny day like today. overall: 3.5 stars. If I'm passing by the area, I'd drop by for the chowder.

We were looking for good clam chowder and decided based on Yelp reviews this would be a great place to start. We didn't know it but we made it 15 minutes before closing. Everyone was still very polite and efficient. We got our order to go in an attempt to be considerate of their closing time. New England Style Clam Chowder 3-4 stars. Very peppery, nice chunks of potato, pleasantly creamy, and large clam bits. Not the BEST chowder I've ever had but it was very tasty. If you don't like pepper you won't like this chowder it's the predominant flavor, I DO like pepper and darn it was tasty. Crab Sandwich. YUM! a solid 4 stars. I thought it could use some sliced tomatoes and crisp lettuce. I added some cherry tomatoes from my garden to it and WOW! The crab was very delicious I greatly enjoyed the sandwich.

Good Chowder and crab sandwich , but the woman who served us seemed a little put out by our presence . If you charge $11 for a $6 crab sandwich , you should be grateful for every tourist that falls into your trap . We won't return .

Can't say this place is all that is cracked up to be. Fun little atmosphere, but chowder was watery and packed full of garlic. I didn't mind the garlic, actually welcomed it but it lacked creamy and heartiness for me. Crab cakes were pretty bland and not impressive either. But this place has got it made on a sunny day night to sit outside and enjoy the people coming in.

I went with a friend to Bodega Bay, and when we saw the Spud Point Crab company clam chowder had been voted best for 8 years, we were really excited to try it. It was rather salty and extremely garlicy and really did not taste good! I don't know if something happened to the recipe on the day that we were there, but I could not recommend it and I cannot believe that what my friend and I tasted was ever voted best of anything. Excellent clam chowder! That's all I've had there, but it's superb.

Hmm, I don't understand the reviews here... The bread was cold, and the crab meat sandwich is cold. The shrimp in the sandwich was the smallest one and again, the bread is cold, yikes.... Maybe I should try the crab cakes and the chilly dog next time, ugh...

Clam chowder is what they are famous for. However, I did not find it to be nearly as good as most people claim it is. Nice place for a super casual seafood meal

Look around at the marina atmosphere, the Annabelle pulling in loaded with crab, notice there are no fish guts under your feet so cozy up to that chowdah & breathe a read more » sigh of contentment. « show less Rest of food - not cheap but to die for The staff was so great and fast service..i will go back and bring my friends here.

You would think with some of the best shellfish/seafood out your backdoor, BB would be teeming with great restaurants. By some cosmic joke it actually has some of the worst seafood restaurants around save for Terrapin Creek and this little (and I mean LITTLE) joint. The chowder is pretty darn good and you get a decent sized "to go" container for around $7 and most importantly, it was piping hot! The crab cakes (which go fast and are only available a couple days a week) can be hit or miss. I've had them when they've been cooked perfectly and delish but the last time they were overcooked and kinda burnt. All seating is outside, picnic table style with room for about 20 people. Last time were there they had a gentleman playing softly on a guitar which was a nice touch. Parking on site only holds 3 cars but there's usually some parking down the street not too far. Strange, but they're closed on Wednesdays

I noticed this place with a line out the door - a crab place. Decided to give it a try. This place is tiny and seating is really hard to get. The service I found pretty lousy. The workers seem *miserable* - I didn't see one smile on any of their faces once (-1star). They are working hard though. The crab sandwich is really good and fresh. The crab cakes are only available on the weekends and at a certain time. If you don't order at the right time then you have to get back in line when they announce that the crab cakes are ready. This is kinda annoying. They're good but not worth the hassle.

The clam chowder is awesome and we always get some when we come here. But it is the crab sandwiches that brings us here (a 2 hour drive from home! The crab is cooked perfectly and seasoned just right with just the right amount of mayo mixed in. It is served on a warm toasted soft, yet slightly crunchy french roll. So just the crab and the roll....perfection! Nothing else to dilute the wonderful taste of the sweet crab.

Best clam chowder I've ever had! All the locals suggested going here for it. Minus 1 for expensive and no alcohol.

Incredible clam chowder. Great crab sandwich. The "bulk crab" was a little frozen-ish (probably very fresh recently, but kinda cold and flavorless). Great vibe. A tad pricey, but it's killer seafood, so.

If Heaven were clam chowder, this is where you'd go to worship. (Even in the pouring, freezing rain, you can stand by their outdoor, steaming crab cooker for warmth like we did! Yum!)
